Center for Experiential Learning -- Live your Learning!

Career Experience Internships

A career experience internship is a great way to explore career options, gain professional work experience, network, and apply the skills you've learned in the classroom to a real work situation.

If you have not yet secured an internship, come to the CEL for internship resources, creating a resume/cover letter, and prep for the interview process.

To help you enhance your internship experience, consider the following areas and how they may play out in the course of your internship.

INSTITUTIONAL REVIEW BOARD: If your internship will involve research activities with human subjects, be sure to see the Institutional Review Board’s website for steps to have your research project reviewed well in advance of the start date of your internship.

Skill Development

What are the skills/areas of expertise you plan to use at the internship?

Academic Learning/Application

How do you intend to apply your academic coursework to your internship?

Career Awareness

How will this internship impact your short and long term career goals?

Organizational Operation

What is the organization's structure and culture? How does this fit into your future plans?

Personal/Professional Development

Explore ways you plan to use the internship to help develop your sense of vocation?

CONSIDER: Reflecting on your experience by keeping a daily journal. At the end of your internship, consider meeting with Sandy Malecha, assistant director, Internships Program for a reflective wrap-up session and/or making an appointment with a career counselor for more career direction.
