Summer Music Camp Classes
You will request classes when you register by ranking your top five selections. Most campers will be enrolled in their first two choices but this will happen on a first-come basis so register early to get your top choices. Class enrollment will also be affected by possible conflicts with the meeting time(s) of your major ensemble(s).
Ear Training: An introduction to every musician's most important skill: listening. Explore ways to improve your ear and "find the right note." Instruction includes group singing, dictation and lecture-demonstration.
Music Theory: A valuable introduction to what's behind the notes on the page, this class will benefit vocalists and instrumentalists alike.
Chamber Music: Chamber music includes wind, brass and strings/piano groupings. The class instrumentation varies depending on registration.
Conducting Basics: What is going through the minds of conductors when they are conducting? This class will give you personal insights that may help you to understand the art of conducting -- and your conductor! Faculty will demonstrate beat patterns and teach you how to prepare for your next conducting assignment.
Gospel Choir: Explore the rich legacy of gospel music as you learn representative works in this very popular class!
Handbells: Are you eager to try your hand at handbells? This ensemble provides opportunities for experienced handbell players as well as those who want to try handbells for the first time.
Jazz Improvisation: Start from scratch or polish your skills in improvisation! This exciting class will challenge you to take some chances. It is open to all instruments.
Musical Theater: Do you have a flair for theater? This popular class includes choreographed performances from favorite musical theater repertoire. Final performances are always a big hit!
Rhythm Workshop: Improve your rhythmic reading and performance skills through rhythm games, body movement and improvisation. Dalcroze and ethnic patterns from all over the world will be used to make playing rhythms fun, enjoyable and easier. Exercises will be performed with and without instruments.
Songwriting: Learn the basics ofsongwriting: how to write and harmonize a good melody and create a lead sheet for a final performance.
