Outcomes of the 1999 Grant (Class of 2005):

  • Together with Humboldt Secondary School's teachers, counselors, and administrators, the high school graduation rate increased by 10% from the previous GEAR UP class.  Humboldt’s Class of 2005 (GEAR UP Cohort) had a graduation rate of 81%, while Humboldt’s Class of 2004 graduation rate was 71% (Source: MN Department of Education).  The Class of 2006 (GEAR UP Cohort) data has not yet been published.
  • GEAR UP tracked mainly the regular education students from the Classes of 2005 and 2006.  The following are results of GEAR UP students (please note the majority of the classes were tracked but GEAR UP did not work with the lower level special education and ELL students):
    • 300 students served at Humboldt Secondary School (classes of 2005 and 2006).
    • 36% of GEAR UP students persisted in the GEAR UP project since 7th grade.
    • 96% of GEAR UP 2005 graduates applied to, and were accepted to, at least 1 college, which is an increase of 38% compared to the previous class (2004).
    • The number of students enrolled in advanced courses increased by 16% since 7th grade.
    • GEAR UP’s four-year high school graduation rate of the class of 2005 was 84%, which is an increase of 52% from the previous class (2004).  Students that began in the GEAR UP program in 7th grade had a four-year high school graduation rate of 88%.
    • Increased financial aid and college planning knowledge by 45% for families and 68% for students.
    • GEAR UP students that persisted in the program since 7th grade are passed the Minnesota Basic Standards test at a 29% higher rate than students enrolled after 7th grade.

Outcomes of the 2005 Grant (Class of 2011):

  • 850 students served at Humboldt Secondary School and Harding High School (class of 2011).
  • 75% of the Original Cohort (students who began working with GEAR UP in 7th grade) have indicated that they have gained more knowledge about postsecondary options as a result of participation in GEAR UP.
  • Original cohort students are:
    • enrolling in advanced Math at a 25% higher rate and passing at a 19% higher rate than new students.
    • enrolling in advanced English at a 16% higher rate and passing at a 4% higher rate than new students.
    • enrolling in advanced Social Studies at a 13% higher rate and passing at a 4% higher rate than new students.
    • enrolling in advanced Science at a 19% higher rate than new students.
    • enrolling in Algebra I at a rate 19% higher rate and a 5% higher rate in Geometry than new students. 
    • enrolling in advanced courses at a 27% higher rate and are passing at a 19% higher rate than new students.
    • passing all of their core classes (English, Math, Science, and Social Studies) at an 8% higher rate than new students
