1. System Power – On

The system should always be powered on.  If it is not (i.e., buttons on the MediaLink Switcher/Input Switcher do not light up when pressed), confirm the power cord is plugged into the wall outlet.  If the system still does not have power, please call the IIT Helpdesk at x3830.

2. Operating the Technology

The Data/Video Projector is used with all technology components.  It should be activated before any other components.

The only situation where the Data/Video Projector would not be needed is if an Audio CD were being played in the DVD/VHS Combo Unit.

2.1 Data/Video Projector

To activate the Data/Video Projector, press and hold the Projector "On" button located on the Switcher for 2 seconds, then release.

Once activated, buttons on the MediaLink Switcher will flash and a light will shine from the lens of the Data/Video Projector.

The Data/Video Projector will take approximately 1 minute to reach full brightness.

2.2 Volume Control

Turn the Volume dial on the MediaLink Switcher to control the sound level for the DVD/VHS Combo Deck, PC & Mac computers, and a laptop.  The LED indicators to the left of the Volume dial display the sound level.

2.3 DVD/VHS Combo Unit

The DVD/VHS Combo Unit will play NTSC VHS tapes and Region 1 DVDs.

  1. Press the Power Button on the front of the DVD/VHS Combo Unit.
  2. Press the DVD/VHS button on the MediaLink Switcher.  When pressed, the DVD/VHS button will appear backlit.
  3. Insert the media into the appropriate side of the Combo Unit.  VHS tapes can be manually pushed into the deck.  For DVDs, press the Eject button, place the DVD in the tray, and press the Eject button again to close the tray.
  4. To play either VHS tapes or DVDs, use the controls located on the face of the Combo Unit.  However, DVD menu control can only be accessed with the Combo Unit remote control.

2.4 Built-in Computers

There are two built-in computers, a Gateway PC and Apple MacMini.

  1. Press the Power Button on the desired computer.  The power button for the PC is on the front center of the unit.  The power button for the MacMini is on the right rear of the unit.  To power the MacMini, slide your finger along the printed line on the top-right of the unit.  Reach over the rear edge and press.  A light on the lower right front of the MacMini will illuminate.
  2. Press the appropriate button, PC or MAC, on the MediaLink Switcher.
  3. To operate the PC or MAC, use the appropriately labeled wireless keyboard and mouse located in the drawer below the computers.
  4. For any computer related questions or issues, contact the IIT Helpdesk at x3830.

2.5 Document Camera

  1. Fully extend the 2 light arms and camera arm.  Insure the camera head on the center arm is pointed down.
  2. Press the Power button located on the left side of the Document Camera in the recessed area near the left light arm.  The unit takes approximately 1 minute to power on.
  3. On the MediaLink Switcher, press the Doc Cam button.
  4. The image can be adjusted using the Auto White Balance, Auto Focus, and Zoom controls located on the Document Camera control panel.
  5. To switch between Lights (used for paper or objects) and Back Light (used for transparencies), press the corresponding button on the Document Camera control panel.  Please allow the machine a few seconds to complete switching between each mode.
  6. Power off the Document Camera by pressing the Power button.  Fold down the camera arm and 2 light arms (in that order) and replace the dust cover (if applicable).

2.6 Laptop Connection

  1. Plug the cables labeled Laptop (draped over the Document Camera) into the appropriate ports on your laptop.
  2. Press the Power button located on the left side of the Document Camera in the recessed area near the left light.
  3. On the MediaLink Switcher, press the Doc Cam button.
  4. Press the Input button on the Document Camera control panel.

3. Operating Audio Equipment

  1. Push the power button (top left corner) on the Sony Receiver (identified by the label "Controls For CD TAPE PHONO ONLY").
  2. Make sure the "Speakers A" button is pressed in.
  3. Select the input on the receiver for the desired source (marked TAPE, CD, and PHONO).
  4. The large dial on the right side of the receiver controls the volume for the audio equipment.  The red dot indicates volume level.
  5. To play a record, pull out the shelf directly below the receiver.  Place the record onto the turntable and select the proper speed (33 or 45, the adapter is located in the back left corner of the turntable).  Release the safety latch on the arm and position the arm over the desired section of the record that you wish to play. Drop the arm onto the record.  If the arm does not drop onto the record, check to see that the switch to the right of the arm is in the down position.  When you are done playing your record, place the arm in the starting position and latch it in place.  Remove your record and push the shelf back in.
  6. To play a cassette, push the power button on the cassette player (lower left corner).  All playback should be done in Tape Deck A (the left side).  To open the deck, push the Eject button to the right of Deck A (indicated with the eject arrow).  Place the cassette tape in the deck with the desired playback side facing out and the tape head down.  The tape door must be shut manually.  Playback controls (PLAY, REWIND, FAST FORWARD, STOP) are located in the center of the unit.
  7. To record a cassette from another cassette insert the cassette to be copied into Deck A and a blank cassette into Deck B.  Press play for Deck A and the record button (indicated by the red dot) on Deck B.
  8. To play a CD, press the power button on the top left corner of the CD player.  Press the OPEN/CLOSE button to the right of the tray, and insert the CD.  When closing the tray DO NOT MANUALLY CLOSE THE TRAY but instead push the OPEN/CLOSE button again.  MANUALLY CLOSING THE TRAY WILL BREAK IT!  Playback controls are to the right of the tray.  The PLAY, PAUSE, and STOP buttons are on the bottom right.  The buttons with the small left and right arrows are for Rewinding/Fast Forwarding within a track.

4. System Power – Off

Performing the following steps will prevent data loss and equipment damage!
  1. Eject all media from the DVD/VHS Combo Unit, PC, or MAC Computers.
  2. Shut down computers as normal and power off any components that may still be on (i.e. DVD/VHS Combo Unit or Document Camera).
  3. Power off the Data/Video Projector by pressing the Projector “Off” button on the Switcher for 3 seconds or until the lights on the Video Switcher flash.  At this time, the Data/Video Projector starts a “cool down” process and cannot be restarted for 3 minutes.
