Old Main 16 Technology Instructions

Please be sure to read all directions carefully before attempting to use the portable cart. We strongly recommend that you attend a training session or request a tutorial well in advance of your class. To set up a tutorial or find out about training sessions, contact the IIT HelpDesk at Extension 3830. We also recommend that you take time to test out your materials prior to your class time.

Projecting the Macintosh Computer

  1. Plug the cart in to a power outlet using the off-white power cord from the power-strip located underneath the Proxima Projector
  2. If you plan on using the Internet or Sven, plug the gray Ethernet cord from the back of the Mac into a live Ethernet jack (a telephone-like jack on the wall with a GREEN DOT next to it)
  3. Turn on the Mac by pushing the power button on the keyboard (button in the upper right corner of the keyboard with a triangle on it)
  4. Turn on the Proxima projector by pushing the Power button on top of the projector.  If the projector does not turn on, flip the red power switch at the back of the projector and then hit the power button on top of the projector again.
  5. The projector will count down as it warms up.  If you do not see the computer screen projected after the warm up period, push the Mode button on top of the projector until Computer 1 appears on the screen.
  6. Rotate the lens on the front of the projector to focus the image
  7. If Internet/Network services do NOT work, go to the Apple menu, select Control Panels and then AppleTalk.  In the Connect via menu, select Ethernet.  Close the control panel and click Save when prompted.
  8. The Mac supports all of the languages taught at St. Olaf (except Greek).  Access these languages under the flag menu in the upper right corner of the screen.
  9. The Microsoft Office programs (PowerPoint, Word, Excel, Internet Explorer) can be access from the puzzle menu in the upper right corner of the screen
  10. The Web can be accessed by double-clicking the Netscape Communicator icon on the desktop (assuming that step 2 has been followed)
  11. Sven (i.e. H: Drive for PC users) can be accessed by double-clicking on the Connect to Sven icon on the desktop and entering your St. Olaf username and password

Projecting the LaserDisc Player

  1. Plug the cart in to a power outlet using the off-white power cord from the power-strip located underneath the Proxima Projector
  2. Turn on the LaserDisc Player by pushing the power button on the front of the player (button in the lower right corner)
  3. Turn on the Proxima projector by pushing the Power button on top of the projector.  If the projector does not turn on, flip the red power switch at the back of the projector and then hit the power button on top of the projector again.
  4. The projector will count down as it warms up.  If you do not see the computer screen projected after the warm up period, push the Mode button on top of the projector until Video 1 appears on the screen.
  5. Insert the LaserDisc and press play

Shutting Down the Cart

  1. If you are using the Mac, go to the Special menu and select Shut Down
  2. If you are using the LaserDisc Player, eject the disc and push the power button on the front of the player
  3. Push the Power button on the top of the Proxima Projector TWICE
  4. Let the projector cool down (approximately two minutes until the fan quiets)
  5. Unplug the Ethernet and power cords

Troubleshooting Tips

No picture from the projector: 

  • Make sure that the lens cap is off
  • Make sure that the red power button at the back of the projector is on when you push the power button on top of the projector

No network:

  • Make sure that the Ethernet cord is plugged into a jack with a green dot next to it
  • Make sure that the Ethernet cord is plugged into the back of the Mac
  • Go to the Apple menu, select Control Panels and then AppleTalk.  Under Connect via, make sure that Ethernet is selected.
  • Go to the Apple menu, select Control Panels and then TCP/IP.  Under Connect via, make sure that Ethernet is selected.  Under Configure, make sure that Using DHCP Server is selected.
