SMARTCART Directions for Science Center 186

Please be sure to read all directions carefully before attempting to use the SmartCart. We strongly recommend that you attend a training session or request a tutorial well in advance of your class. To set up a tutorial or find out about training sessions, contact the IIT HelpDesk at Extension 3830. We also recommend that you take time to test out your materials prior to your class time.

Turning on the SmartCart

  1. Get a key from one of the department AAAs in the Math office.
  2. Unlock and open the front panel of the SmartCart.
  3. Unlock the projector panel on top of SmartCart, push the button in, and pull panel up to about a 45-degree angle.
  4. Push the green button on the Sony remote and hold it down about two seconds to turn on the video projector. The projector takes about 20 seconds to warm up and become bright.

Operating the ELMO Document Camera

The Lamens functions like an overhead projector without requiring transparencies. The Lamens can display pages from books or any objects that you put on the flatbed.

  1. Turn on the Document Camera (DC) by pressing the button with the power symbol on the front of the device. Press and hold until the button lights up.
  2. Switch the smart cart input by pressing the Doc Cam button on the switcher below the DVD/VCR, and cycle through the inputs until the Doc Cam is displayed.
  3. To adjust the brightness turn the black knob on the front of the DC’s base.
  4. To focus adjustment is around the lens, on the head of the DC.
  5. Zooming in with the camera is done by raising and lowering the camera head in relation to the viewing image.
  6. To turn the camera off press the power button on the front of the camera again. The button light will go off.

Operating the Gateway PC

  1. Turn on the SmartCart and projector as directed in the section Turning on the SmartCart.
  2. First, locate the input switch inside the cart. The switch box has the labels PC, Doc Cam, and Laptop. Press the button labeled PC. Then, push the Power button on the PC.
  3. Push the Input button on the Sony remote until the projector displays the PC desktop (Input 1).
  4. Pull out the keyboard and mouse tray on the right side of the SmartCart. Now you can begin using the PC.
  5. When you are done using the PC, shut it down from the Start menu as you would normally shut down a computer.

Playing a DVD movie

The SmartCart is equipped with a DVD/VCR combo deck.

  1. Turn on the SmartCart and projector as directed in the section Turning on the SmartCart
  2. Turn on the DVD/VCR combo player by pressing the power button.
  3. Open the DVD tray by pushing the eject button. Insert the DVD into the tray and push it shut. Press play to start the movie.
  4. Press the DVD/Video button on the switcher below the DVD/VCR.
  5. Push the Input button on the Sharp remote until the screen shows the DVD.
  6. When you are done using the DVD player, eject the DVD. It is not necessary to turn off the DVD/VCR before shutting down the SmartCart.

Operating the VCR

The SmartCart is equipped with a DVD/VCR combo deck.

  1. Turn on the SmartCart and projector as directed in the section Turning on the SmartCart
  2. Turn on the DVD/VCR combo player by pressing the power button.
  3. Insert a tape and press play to start the movie.
  4. Push the Input button on the Sony remote until the screen shows the VCR.
  5. When you are done, eject the tape. It is not necessary to turn off the DVD/VCR before shutting down the SmartCart.

Using the SmartBoard

The SmartBoard acts as an interactive computer screen while the PC is in use.

  1. Turn on the SmartCart and projector as directed in the section Turning on the SmartCart.
  2. Turn on either the PC using the directions in the sectionOperating the PC
  3. Orient the board by double-clicking the SmartBoard Driver icon on the desktop. Select the “Orient Board” option. You can choose either the Quick setup or Standard, depending on how accurately you want to select things on the SmartBoard.
  4. Lightly tap the board to click, using your fingers just like you would use a mouse. The board reads your finger-clicking as a left mouse button, however you can right click on objects on the board by pushing the “R click” button located on the right side of the pen trays.
  5. Use the pens in the color-coded trays to draw when the PC is selected.
  6. To type directly on the SmartBoard push the keyboard button on the right of the pen trays.

Using a Laptop

  1. Turn on the SmartCart and projector as directed in the section Turning on the SmartCart.
  2. First, connect the monitor cable to the video out port on the laptop and the network and audio cables to the network card and audio out on the laptop.
  3. Locate the input switch inside the cart. The switch box has the labels PC, Doc Cam, and Laptop. Press the button labeled Laptop. Then, push the Power button on the laptop.
  4. Push the Input button on the Sony remote until the projector displays the laptop desktop (Input B).
  5. When you are done using the laptop, shut it down and disconnect the monitor, network, and audio cables.

Shutting down the SmartCart

  1. Make sure that both computers and ELMO Document Camera have been manually shut down.
  2. Use the Sony remote to turn off the video projector by pushing the Power button twice.
  3. Let the projector’s fans run for several minutes until they automatically shut off, then turn off the master power to the SmartCart using the switch on top of the cart. (If your department decided to leave the SmartCart power on all day, then it is not necessary to turn off the master power switch, so you do not have to wait for the fans to cool down before leaving the cart.)
    **If the power to the SmartCart is turned off before the projector is done cooling itself with its fan, it increases the wear on the projector and might cause it to overheat and break down.
  4. Close the projector panel and lock it
  5. Close the front panel on the SmartCart and lock it.
  6. Return the key to the AAA.
