Technology Users "Best Practices"

• NO CAPPUCCINO ... Keep all liquids or chemicals away from the technology desk.
• DON'T MESS WITH IT ... Do not disassemble, rearrange, rewire, modify, or remove anything. If you would like the equipment to function differently, please email classrooms@stolaf.edu to request changes.
• CALL IT IN ... Promptly report any problems, with the technology, so we can minimize any disruption of your class and those that follow. Report anything you find not working, missing, tampered with, or really frustrating.
• TURN IT OFF ... Be GREEN and help preserve the college's investment. Turn off the equipment when you are finished..... especially PROJECTORS.
• CLEAN IT UP ... Respect the users that follow. Keep the desk free from chalk, markers, erasers, and office supplies. If you brought it in, take it with you.

The CONTROL PANEL

Turn ON the room's LCD Display

On the CONTROL PANEL, press DISPLAY ON button.

(The button will blink for 10 seconds while the powers ON. No other buttons will function during this time.)

Choose the source you wish to display

Using the buttons on the right, choose from:

COMPUTER (the installed computer on this desk)

DOC CAM (to display documents, transparancies, or small objects using the Document Camera)

LAPTOP (to display your laptop computer or other portable VGA video or audio device)

DVD/VCR (to show a DVD or VHS tape using the DVD/VCR deck).

Power ON the equipment you chose to display

Refer to the pages that follow for instructions on using each source.

Use VOLUME knob to adjust sound level

Only the audio for the source you chose, will play through the room's speakers. Be familiar with all other volume adjustments on the computer, your laptop, or other portable device.

When you're finished...

Log OFF of the computer. (The computer may be left powered ON until the end of the day.)

Turn OFF the LCD Display

Don't forget your discs, tapes, or USB devices.

Clear the desk of all clutter. (papers, office supplies, markers, erasers)

Use the COMPUTER (Windows or Mac)

On the COMPUTER,

Press POWER to turn it on. (wait for menu screen)
Choose your preferred operating system by clicking on the Mac or Windows image

To change the operating system:

From Mac to Windows: Log-off Mac. Wait for the menu screen. Choose Windows.

From Windows to Mac: Reboot the computer. Wait for the menu screen. Choose Mac

To eject a CD or DVD disk, close the disk application, then press F12 on the keyboard.

Show a Document or Object

On the DOCUMENT CAMERA,
           
To set up:
Adjust the white camera head to a horizontal position.  Aim the camera lens down.

Remove display base from rack shelf, if needed.  (Recommended for transparencies or small objects.)  Place it under the camera head.

To operate:
Press and hold POWER button for 2 seconds. 
(Power button will light green.)
Twist left end of camera head to ZOOM in and out.
Press button on left end of camera head to AUTO FOCUS.
LIGHT switch is located on camera head.

Use the light only when necessary, as it will often add glare to the projected image.

Show a DVD

A DVD can be played using the DVD/VCR deck or the Computer.  For higher video quality, use the computer.  You can play a Region 2 or 3 DVD in classrooms furnished with Multi-region DVD/VCRs, or try VLC on the computer.

To Play a DVD using the DVD/VCR,

On the DVD/VCR,
Press POWER to turn it on.
Press OPEN/CLOSE to open disk tray.
Insert disk, push PLAY… or use the remote provided.

To Play a DVD using the COMPUTER

Follow the ‘Use the COMPUTER’ instructions to display the computer.   Log in to either Mac or Windows.  Insert a DVD into the computer disk drive.

To play the DVD,
On MAC we recommend using DVD Player or VLC.
On Windows, we recommend Windows Media Player or VLC

Display your Laptop Computer

Power ON your laptop computer.
Connect the LAPTOP CABLES (VGA video, audio and network) Wireless network is also available in all classrooms.

Mac laptops require a VGA video adapter. (Available for checkout at the IIT Helpdesk)
             
Windows Laptops only:  If necessary, turn on the monitor output.
            Usually Function F4 or F8 (ex. Hold FUNCTION button, press F4)

If necessary, turn on 'mirroring' in your display settings, so the room display image is identical to that on your laptop screen.

Adjust volume level with Control Panel and/or Laptop volume controls.

Show a VHS Video Tape

A DVD can be played using DVD/VCR deck or the computer.  For better video quality, use the computer.  You can play a Region 2 or 3 DVD in classrooms furnished with Multi-region DVD players (labeled as such), or try VLC on the computer.

To show a DVD using the DVD/VCR,

Power ON the room's display. Choose DVD as your source.

On the DVD/VCR,
Press POWER to turn it on.
Press OPEN/CLOSE to open disk tray.
Insert disk. Press OPEN/CLOSE to close disk tray.

Use the remote control (or Touchpanel controls) provided.

To show a DVD using the COMPUTER

Power ON the room's display. Choose COMPUTER as your source. Log in. Insert a DVD disk.

In MAC, when you insert a DVD, it will automatically begin playing in 'DVD Player'. If you prefer to use VLC, close DVD Player and open VLC.

Using Windows, we recommend Windows Media Player or VLC.
