Adding the HP4300 printer on a PC
Most of the public computing labs have networked HP4300 series laserjet printers you can use. While some computers will already be set up to use these printers, you may need to add the printer yourself. To do so, follow the directions below:
- Check for the existing printer:
- In the 'Start' menu, choose 'Settings' and 'Printers'.
- If you see an icon for the printer you want to print to, do not re-install the driver. Select that printer.
- If the printer has not been added, you
will have to add the printer:
Instructions for Windows XP:- On the 'Start' menu, choose 'Printers and Faxes'.
- In the left column of the window that appears, click 'Add a Printer'.
- Windows will then take you through a series of steps to add the printer.
- Windows will ask you to choose the kind of printer you will be installing. Select 'A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer.' Click 'Next'.
- When prompted for the network name of the printer, choose
to browse, then browse through the following categories:

- Netware Network
- Novell Directory Services
- STOLAF
- O=STOLAF
- OU=Academic - Windows will display a pop-up box asking you to confirm that the printer source is trustworthy. Click 'Yes' to continue.
- Windows will display another pop-up box informing you that the server does not have the correct printer driver. Click 'OK' to continue.
- In the next step, Windows will ask you to choose the driver from a list of manufacturer's drivers or to provide the disk. Choose 'Have Disk' (a button in the window).
- Windows will ask you to specify the location of the driver.
You need to specify the network location of the driver.
In the Choose Windows driver box, type the following path:

P:\Apps\Installs\Printing\Win2k\HP4300\
- Click on 'Next' and follow the onscreen instructions to finish the installation.
Instructions for Windows 95, 98, ME, or 2000:- On the 'Start' menu, choose 'Settings', then 'Printers'.
- In the window that appears, double-click on the icon with the title, "Add Printer".
- Windows will then take you through a series of steps to add the printer.
- When Windows asks you if it is a 'Local' or 'Network' printer, choose 'Network'.
- When prompted for the network name of the printer, choose to browse, then choose 'SVEN' and find the name of the printer you wish to add. Printers are given names that correspond to their location. For instance, the printer in Ellingson Hall is called 'ellingson' and the printer in Science Center 146 is called 'sc146.'
- In the next step, Windows will ask you to choose the driver from a list of manufacturer's drivers or to provide the disk. Choose 'Have Disk' (a button in the window).
- Windows will ask you to specify the location of the driver.
You need to specify the network location of the driver.
In the Choose Windows driver box, type the following path:

- Click on 'Next' and follow the onscreen instructions to finish the installation.
Your printer should now work. If there are problems, contact the helpdesk.
To ensure the pages do not print out unwanted banners
Windows XP:
- Go to 'Start', then 'Printers and Faxes'.
- Find the printer you set up for the network printer and click once on it to highlight it.
- Go to the File menu and choose Properties (or right-click on the printer and choose Properties)
- Choose the tab labelled 'NetWare Settings'.
- On that tab is a section labelled 'Banner Settings'. Make sure the check-box labelled 'Enable banner' is un-checked.
- Click OK. Then close the Printers window. You have now disabled the banner page. Now that you have the correct driver there are several options to conserve paper resources.
Windows 95, 98, ME, or 2000
