Switching from Eudora to Netscape Messenger
If you plan to use Netscape Messenger, version 4.5 (or newer) of Netscape Communicator is required. (Macintosh Requirements: Power Mac with 64 MB of RAM or more. PC Requirements: Pentium/Celeron with 32 MB of RAM or more.) The instructions that follow assume that you are using Netscape 4.5 or newer.
Before you can import your Eudora mailboxes and address book, you need to configure Netscape Messenger for your IMAP e-mail account.
Be aware that when you transfer mailboxes and your personal address book from Eudora to Netscape Messenger, you are making only a local copy of these resources. That is to say, your transferred mailboxes and address book will be available only on the computer on which you made the transfer. Eudora's "mailboxes" are called "folders" in Netscape Messenger. If you want to have folders available from any computer, you will need to create new ones in Netscape Messenger, making them "subfolders" of USERNAME.mail.stolaf.edu (where USERNAME is your St. Olaf username).
To import Eudora mailboxes and address books into Netscape Messenger 4.5 or newer, follow these steps:
- Launch Netscape Communicator, and choose "Messenger" from the Communicator menu.
- Pull down the Communicator menu again, drag down to "Tools," then select "Netscape Import" (on the Macintosh) or "Import Utility" (on the PC) from the side menu that appears.
- The "Netscape Messenger Import Utility" dialog box will open. For the import format, select "Eudora," and click "Next."
- A list of your Eudora mailboxes will be displayed. To the left of each mailbox name is a checkbox, which is checked by default. If you want to have a mailbox imported into Messenger, leave the box checked. Otherwise, click to remove the check. When you are ready to proceed, click "Next."
- When Messenger has finished importing your mailboxes, it will let you import your Address Book. Leave the box to the left of "Eudora Nicknames" checked, and click "Next."
