Novell Server Organization

St. Olaf uses Novell Netware servers to provide much of the network storage space used by students, faculty, and staff. The servers provide everyone with personal storage space, shared spaces used by various groups and departments on campus, application installers, class directories, and more. They are backed up nightly so they provide a good way of safe-guarding your files from being lost.

Home Directories

Location: stuhome.stolaf.edu and fshome.stolaf.edu

The stuhome.stolaf.edu server a home directory for each student at St. Olaf. The fshome.stolaf.edu server contains a home directory for each faculty and staff member. Each user only has access to their own home directory. Thus, these directories are useful for storing private documents not intended for sharing with others.

Users have a 50MB disk quota on their home directory. Disk quota increases are granted for academic/administrative purposes only and can be requested via e-mail to root@stolaf.edu.

On Macs, when the servers are mounted on your desktop, you will see an icon labeled 'stuhome' or 'fshome' depending on which server you have connected to. Within this server icon you will see one directory, your home directory.

On PCs, a user's home directory is mapped to the H: drive. When you view the H: drive you are seeing your home directory on stuhome.stolaf.edu or fshome.stolaf.edu.

Shared Directories

Location: shared.stolaf.edu

All shared directories are located on the server shared.stolaf.edu. Shared directories are used by groups of people to share files. Access to a particular shared directory is typically limited to a group of a few users.

To request a new shared directory, e-mail root@stolaf.edu with a name for the directory and a list of users who should be granted access. Each new shared directory will have a disk quota of 50MB. Requests for space increases can be made to root@stolaf.edu.

On Macs, the Shared volume is accessible from the server shared.stolaf.edu. When mounted on your desktop, you will see an icon labeled 'shared'. Within 'shared' you will see any shared directories to which you have been granted access.

On PCs, shared directories appear on the S: drive.

Applications and Installers

Location: prime.stolaf.edu

All applications and installers are on the server prime.stolaf.edu. Users have read-only access to these applications and installers. This directory contains a number of sub-directories:

  • Apps – PC applications
  • Apps\Installs – PC application installers and drivers
  • Mac Apps – Macintosh applications
  • Mac Installs – Installers and drivers for Macintoshes

On Macs, the Prime volume is accessible form the server prime.stolaf.edu. When mounted on your desktop, you will see an icon labeled 'prime'.

On PCs, the Prime volume is mapped to the P: drive.

Class Directories

Location: classes.stolaf.edu

A class directory is automatically created each term for each class section. Students are automatically granted access to those classes for which they are registered. Likewise, when faculty (and TAs) sign up for their course mailing lists, they will be granted access to the corresponding class directory.

To facilitate faculty preparing class directories for upcoming semesters, these directories will be made available in advance of the start of the semester. Also, previous semester class directories will be available for a time after the end of the semester.

Each class directory has a disk quota of 100MB. Faculty can request disk quota increases for class directories via e-mail to root@stolaf.edu.

On Macs, the Classes volume is accessible from the server classes.stolaf.edu. When mounted on your desktop, you will see an icon labeled 'classes'. Within 'classes' you will see any class directories to which you have access.

On PCs, class directories appear on the L: drive.

Explanation of the directories within a class directory

Each class directory is automatically created with the following directory structure:

Class Materials
The Class Materials directory is used to store materials used by the class, such as a syllabus, papers, etc. Students can only read the files in this directory, they cannot make changes. Faculty have full read and write access.

DropBox
The DropBox directory is used by students to submit assignments. Students can only write to this directory; they cannot see its contents. When students submit a file to the DropBox, they may want to add their name to the name of the file so that it can be identified as their submission. Faculty have full read and write access to the DropBox directory.

Professor
The Professor directory is only used by faculty and TAs to store private information about the class, such as class lists, grades, etc. This directory is hidden from students so they can neither see nor make changes to the files. Faculty have full read and write access to this directory.

Student Shared
The Student Shared directory is a place where groups of students can collaborate on documents. Both students and faculty have read and write access to the files in this directory. Faculty should remind students of the ideas of academic integrity and to not delete or change other students' work.

Library Materials
The Library Materials folder is used by the Library to put "e-reserves" or documents that you have placed on reserve and which they have scanned and created electronic versions of. Students and faculty can only read the files in this folder; they cannot make changes.
