Manually Installing and Using stoPrint in Macintosh OS X 10.5
To use stoPrint, you must first install the stoPrint software. Once installed, you can print to the stoPrint printer just like any other printer.
Installing the stoPrint software on Macintosh is a three-step process:
- Installing the stoPrint software
- Installing the printer description file (PPD)
- Configuring the printer
Installing the stoPrint Software
- Download the stoPrint Pharos software.
- After the installer (Popup.dmg) is finished downloading, double-click on the file. This will open a windows with the file "Popup.pkg" in it.
- Double-click on Popup.pkg to start the installer.
- Click Continue and then click Continue again.
- Select the destination for the install (typically something like "Macintosh HD") and click Continue.
- Click Install. You may be asked to enter an administrator username and password.
- When the installation has completed, click Close.
Installing the Printer Description File (PPD)
- Download the printer description file installer.
- After the installer (LD425PPDs-105.dmg) is finished downloading, double-click the file to begin installation. This will open a window with the file "PPD_Installer_LN1393E3L.pkg" in it.
- Double-click on PPD_Installer_LN1393E3L.pkg to start the installer.
- Click Continue three times, and click Agree to agree to the license agreement.
- Select the destination for the install (typically something like "Macintosh HD") and click Continue.
- Click Install. You may be asked to enter an administrator username and password.
- When the installation has completed, click Close.
Configuring the Printer
- Click on the Apple Menu and click System Preferences.
- Click Print & Fax. Click the Lock icon and type in an administrator username and password.
- Click the plus sign (+) above the lock.
- Hold down the Control key (on your keyboard) and click on the toolbar. A popup menu will appear. Then select "Customize Toolbar." Drag the "Advanced" icon to the toolbar and close the customization menu. If you have previously done this, you will already see the Advanced icon.
- Click the Advanced button on the toolbar.
- In the drop-down menu for Type select "Pharos Print Server."
- In the URL field, enter "popup://printers.stolaf.edu/stoPrint".
- In the Name field, enter "stoPrint".
- In the drop-down menu for Print Using select "Select a driver to use...".
- Scroll through the list and select "LANIER MP 2550/LD425 PS".
- Click Add and then click Continue.
This adds a new printer named "stoPrint" to your computer. When you print to this printer, a pop-up will prompt you to enter your username.
Using stoPrint
- When printing a document, select the stoPrint printer.
- When prompted, enter your username. Patrons with a St. Olaf username should enter their username. Other patrons should enter the email address associated with their Ole Card or Carleton Card.
- The print job will stay in the queue on the print server until it is released. Print jobs that are not released within 24 hours are automatically deleted.
- At one of the stoPrint multi-function copiers, swipe your card in the card reader and press Print.
- Press "Charge to personal account". If you have been authorized to charge print and copy jobs to a department account, you may select that instead.
- Press the print job in the list that you would like to print and press the green arrow. Your job will be printed.
