Printing with Vista
As of September 1, 2007 , the normal procedure for installing St. Olaf public printers on personal computers (using iPrint) is not supported with Windows Vista. Instead, use the process detailed here.
To setup a St. Olaf network printer on Vista:
-
First, launch the Add Printer Wizard. To open the wizard, first go to the Start menu. Open the Control Panel and go to "Printers". In the popup window look for a button near the top of the screen labeled “Add a printer” and click it.
-
From the two options that appear, select "Add a network, wireless or Bluetooth printer."
-
Your computer may attempt to populate a list of printers detected on the network. This is unnecessary. You can stop the search with the button on the panel. Click "The printer that I want isn't listed."
-
Use the "Select a shared printer by name" option and enter the name of the printer into the field using the following form
http://pubprinters.stolaf.edu/ipp/printername
substituting the actual name of the printer for "printername". See the table below for a list of printer names.

Printer names are as follows:
| Residence Halls | Public Labs |
| ellingson | hh205 |
| hillkitt | hh407 |
| hoyme | rml115 |
| kildahl | rml321 |
| larson | rml330 |
| mellby | rml560 |
| mohn | sc248 |
| rand | sc290 |
| thorson | |
| ytt118 | |
- Vista will contact the printer and determine the proper printer driver to use. Click Next. (If you are installing the sc290, rml115, rml321, rml330, or rml560 printers, see additional steps below.)
- Click Finish to complete the installation.

Additional Instructions for installing network printers SC290, RML115, RML321, RML330, and RML560
Windows Vista comes with printer drivers for the Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4300 printers found in most public labs. The network printers listed above are Hewlett Packard LaserJet 4350s. Vista does not come with a printer driver for these printers, so the drivers need to be downloaded from Hewlett Packard. Follow these additional instructions to install the network printers in these labs.
- Download the drivers from Hewlett Packard's web site. Drivers
for the HP LaserJet 4350 can be found here.
Download the PCL 6 driver for the best results. You will need to choose
which version of Vista you are running, 32-bit or 64-bit. To determine
this, go to Start > right click on Computer > Properties.

- Double-click on the driver file download to uncompress it; remember where you put it for step 4.
- Return to the "Add Printer Wizard" window. When prompted to select the manufacturer and model of your printer, click "Have Disk."
- Browse to the uncompressed driver files you downloaded and click OK.
- Click Next and then click Finish to complete the printer installation.
