Setting up a Network Printer in Windows
This page provides detailed instructions for setting up a network printer on your Windows computer.
If you are using a Microsoft Windows Vista, there are separate instructions for setting up a network printer.
Step 1: Meet the requirements
Setting up network printing requires Internet Explorer version 5.5 with Service Pack 2 (or later) or Mozilla Firefox version 1.5 (or later). You can determine the version of Internet Explorer by selecting 'About Internet Explorer' from the Help menu within Internet Explorer. You can determin the version of Firefox by selecting 'About Mozilla Firefox' from the Help menu within Firefox.
If you need a newer version of either browser, install Internet Explorer 6 with Service Pack 1 or install Firefox 1.5x. Download and follow the prompts and restart your computer if needed.
Additionally, in order to print, one must be connected to the Novell network (i.e., you see the network drives such as H:, L: and S: when you look in 'My Computer'). College-owned computers already do this automatically. Personally-owned computers need to be set up to connect to the Novell network.
Step 2: Install the Novell iPrint client
Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, go to http://pubprinters.stolaf.edu:631/ipp. If you do not already have the iPrint client installed you will be prompted to install it. Follow the prompts and accept defaults. Reboot your computer when prompted.
To reinstall the iPrint client, go to http://pubprinters.stolaf.edu:631/ipp and click on the Install iPrint Client link on the upper right-hand side of the page. Reboot your computer when prompted.
Step 3: Install printers
Using Internet Explorer or Firefox, click one of the links below, locate the printer in the list and click the Install link (the name of the printer) to install the printer on your computer.
