Configurating a Proxy Server

We recommend you configure your web browser to use the St. Olaf proxy server. This will greatly improve the performance of your web browsing. This can also be used to access on-campus web resources when you are off-campus. (You will be prompted for your St. Olaf username and password in that situation.)

FIREFOX PROXY CONFIGURATION (Mac, Windows)

  1. From the browser's menu bar, choose Tools -> Options (PC) or Firefox -> Preferences (Mac).

  2. Click on the Advanced category at the top and then the Network tab.

  3. Click on the Settings button in the Connection area.

  4. Click on "Automatic Proxy Configuration URL " and enter

    http://www.stolaf.edu/proxy.pac

    into the box.

  5. Click Reload and OK

  6. If "Automatic Proxy Configuration URL " is unavailable, you may configure your proxy for the HTTP service manually by clicking "Manual proxy configuration" and entering:

    HTTP Proxy Port

    www-proxy.stolaf.edu 8080

SAFARI PROXY CONFIGURATION (Mac OS X)

  1. From the browser's menu bar, choose Preferences -> Advanced -> Change Settings (next to Proxies)

  2. A window named Network will pop up. Scroll to the bottom of the "Select a proxy" list and choose "Automatic Proxy Configuration."

  3. In the URL box, enter

    http://www.stolaf.edu/proxy.pac

  4. Make sure "Use Passive FTP Mode" is deselected and click "Apply Now."

NETSCAPE PROXY CONFIGURATION (Mac, Windows, Netscape 4.7x or 7.x)

  1. From the browser's menu bar, choose Edit -> Preferences -> Advanced -> Proxies

  2. Click on "Automatic Proxy Configuration" and enter

    http://www.stolaf.edu/proxy.pac

    into the "Configuration Location (URL)" box.

  3. If "Automatic Proxy Configuration" is unavailable, you may configure your proxy for the HTTP service manually with:

    Address of Proxy Server Port

    www-proxy.stolaf.edu 8080

INTERNET EXPLORER PROXY CONFIGURATION (IE 5 or 6)

  1. From the browser's menu bar, choose Tools -> Internet Options
  2. Click on the 'Connections' tab
  3. Click the 'LAN Settings...' button
  4. Check the "Use a proxy server" box
  5. Click on 'Use automatic configuration script' and enter the following into the Address box:

    http://www.stolaf.edu/proxy.pac

  6. Click OK.
  7. Click OK.

If 'Use automatic configuration script' isn't available:

  1. Click on 'Use a proxy server for your LAN'
  2. Click on 'Advanced...' button
  3. In the Proxy Settings window, enter the following information:

    Type Proxy address to use Port

    HTTP: www-proxy.stolaf.edu 8080

  4. Click OK.
  5. Check "Bypass proxy server for local addresses"
  6. Click OK.
  7. Click OK.
