Off Campus File Access

St. Olaf provides off-campus access to files stored on the Novell fileservers. You are able to access files in your home directory and in any shared or class directories to which you have access from any Mac or PC with an Internet connection.

How do I connect

Using off-campus file access

When using files from off-campus, first copy them to your local hard drive before you work with them, and copy them back to the server after you are finished with them. Internet connections are typically much slower compared to the connection speed of your office computer, and some applications may have trouble working remotely if you don't copy the files to the local hard drive first.

Notes for safe and secure use of off-campus file access

If you are accessing files through a web browser, click the logout button and close the browser window after you are finished.

Only set up connections to the campus file servers on computers you own. In other cases, such as on a computer in an Internet cafe, use the web interface, otherwise everyone who uses that computer may have access to all of your files.

Connections from PCs go over an encrypted connection.

Connections from a web browser on a Mac are encrypted.

Connecting your Mac via the Goliath software uses an unencrypted connection. The developers of Goliath are working to correct a problem with encrypted connections. When it is resolved we will disable unencrypted access from Macs. At that time, all access to files on the Novell servers from off-campus will be encrypted.
