Installing and Running Symantec Anti-Virus

Symantec Anti-Virus (SAV) is one of the most widely recognized names in anti-virus software. IIT installs Symantec Anti-Virus on all college-owned computers and provides it to any St. Olaf student to be installed on their computer while at St. Olaf.

Installing Symantec Anti-Virus

PC Users:

  1. From the Start Menu, choose Run... (on XP) or click in the Start Search box (on Vista).
  2. Type:
      \\sav.stolaf.edu\install
    and press Enter.
  3. In the window that appears, choose the appropriate folder for your operating system
    • XP for Windows XP computers
    • VISTA32 for computers running the 32-bit version of Vista
    • VISTA64 for computers running the 64-bit version of Vista
  4. Double-click Setup or Setup.exe and follow the on-screen instructions.

Mac Users:

The current version of Symantec Anti-Virus does not work on newer Mac-OS computers. There are no viruses in the wild that affect an updated Mac-OS computer. No anti-virus software is needed at this time as long as you keep your operating system up to date.

Running Symantec Anti-Virus

Once you have installed SAV, it will run in the background and watch the activity on your computer, making sure you stay virus-free. If it detects a virus, it will alert you to its presence and ask you what you want to do with it. In most cases, it can remove the virus or quarantine the infected files.

Updating your Virus Definitions

New viruses are released and discovered every day. It's important that SAV be kept up-to-date of these new threats to your computer. SAV will periodically check for updates and will also alert you if it's list of viruses (called virus definitions) is getting old. When this occurs, it is very important that you update the virus definitions to include recently-discovered viruses.

  1. Start the Symantec Anti-Virus Console
    • On a PC, go to Start -> Programs -> Symantec Client Security -> Symantec Anti-Virus




  2. Click on the 'LiveUpdate...' button.





  3. On the Live Update window, click Next (PC) to search for updates.





  4. If there aren't any updates to install, click Finish. Otherwise, click Next to download.

  5. Once the updates have been downloaded, click Finish to install the updates.

  6. Click Exit to close the SAV window.
