SPSS Site License Installation on Macs

If you are a Mac laptop user, or need SPSS to run on your Mac when disconnected from the St. Olaf network, follow these instructions to install SPSS. Your Mac will need to be connected to the Internet during this process to properly activate SPSS.

  1. Contact the IIT Helpdesk to obtain the SPSS serial number and authorization code (without this code, you will not be able to properly license SPSS).
  2. Download the SPSS installer to your computer.
  3. Double-click on the SPSSMAC.dmg disk image to mount it. This will create an SPSSMAC disk icon on your desktop.
  4. Double-click on the SPSSMAC disk icon to open it.
  5. Double-click on the SPSS Installer to launch the installer.
  6. Enter your username and password when requested.
  7. Select a "Site license" install and click Continue.
  8. Accept the terms of the license agreement and click Continue.
  9. Click Continue again.
  10. Enter your username, organization and the serial number obtained from the helpdesk. Click Continue.
  11. Click Continue again.
  12. Click Install and the installation will begin.
  13. When the installation is finished you will be prompted to register with spss.com. Uncheck this box and click OK.
  14. You will then be prompted to license SPSS. Note: Occasionally this dialog box pops up behind the installation dialog box, making it difficult or impossible to see. You may need to move the installation dialog box to reveal the activation dialog box; alternatively, you could cycle through open windows by pressing Alt-Tab or use Expose.
  15. Choose "License my product now" and click Next. Click Next again.
  16. Enter the SPSS authorization code and click Next.
  17. Select Internet and click Next.
  18. If the authorization was successful, you will see the text "Authorization Succeeded" and "Successfully processed all codes". Click Next and then click Finish.
  19. You're done! You can run SPSS by browsing to Applications -> SPSSInc -> SPSS16 and double-clicking on "SPSS 16.0"
Uninstalling SPSS on Macs

If you need to remove SPSS from your Macintosh, follow these instructions.

  1. Browse to Applications -> SPSSInc > SPSS16 -> _uninst.
  2. Double-click on uninstall.jar to launch the uninstaller.
  3. Follow the prompts to uninstall SPSS from your Mac.

Note: If you have difficulty re-installing SPSS after the above, you may need to delete some additional files in your user directory. Launch the Terminal application and type:

  1. rm -rf ~/.spss
  2. rm -rf ~/InstallShield
  3. rm -rf ~/Library/Preferences/com.spss.spss\ for\ mac.plist
