Installing SPSS 18 Installation for Macs

St. Olaf's site license allows SPSS 18 to be installed on college-owned computers. There are two types of installations: one for laptop users who need to use SPSS while disconnected from the St. Olaf network, and one for desktops.

To install SPSS 18 on a Macintosh desktop (network license installation)

This network license installation uses a license server on St. Olaf's network. Therefore, to use SPSS 18, your computer needs to be connected to the St. Olaf network.

  1. Launch the installer located at prime:Installs:SPSS18: OS X:PASW Statistics Installer.
  2. Enter your password to allow the installer to make changes to your computer.
  3. Ensure that "English" is selected and click OK.
  4. Choose "Network license" and click Next.
  5. For the License Manager name, enter "trak.stolaf.edu" "130.71.128.204" and click Next. (This must be the numeric address, or SPSS will crash after a few minutes)
  6. Click Next four more times to accept installation defaults.
  7. Click Install to begin the installation.
  8. When the installation is complete click Done. SPSS 18 is now ready to use.

To install SPSS 18 on a Macintosh laptop (site license installation)

Before starting the SPSS installation, you will need to obtain an activation code. Contact the IT Helpdesk (ext. 3830, helpdesk@stolaf.edu) and ask for the SPSS 18 for Macintosh activation code. Your computer will need to be connected to the Internet to complete the activation process.

  1. Launch the installer located at prime:Installs:SPSS18: OS X:PASW Statistics Installer.
  2. Enter your password to allow the installer to make changes to your computer.
  3. Ensure that "English" is selected and click OK.
  4. Choose "Site license" and click Next.
  5. Accept the terms of the license agreement and click Next.
  6. Click Next 4 more times to accept installation defaults.
  7. Click Install to begin the installation.
  8. When the installation is complete, uncheck "Register my product" and click Done to begin the authorization process.
  9. Select License my product now and click Next.
  10. Enter the activation code obtained from the IT Helpdesk and click Next. After a few moments, you should see a message that the activation process succeeded.
  11. Click Next and Finish to complete the activation process. SPSS 18 is now ready to use.
