Personal Use of College Computers and Networks

Incidental personal use of campus hardware technologies during breaks is permissible only if the use:

  • Is approved by the immediate supervisor;
  • Does not consume more than a trivial amount of resources that could otherwise be used for college purposes;
  • Does not interfere with productivity
  • Does not preempt any St. Olaf activity; and
  • Is not associated with a commercial activity.

Users who consume large amounts of network bandwidth for personal or recreational use may lose their computing privileges and may have their network disconnected. This use may include, but is not limited to network gaming, downloading of music or video files, etc.

With supervisor approval, users may maintain legal music files on their desktop computers.  Users must be aware that these files will not be transferred by IIT staff to a new computer at the time a new computer is installed or at the time of a hardware failure, etc.
