Vista and Office 2007

As most of you know, the latest version of Microsoft Windows, called Vista, and the newest version of the Office suite, Office 2007, is available. There have been some questions about both items and we want to share some helpful information about them.

Office 2007

  • Completely new and redesigned layout — called the ribbon layout — that rearranges the menus and buttons. From user tests so far, the new layout is a little confusing at first but great once you get used to it.
  • New file formats. These new file formats are not compatible with older versions of Office so if you wish to share documents (or hand in homework electronically), you need to "save down" to a more common, compatible format.
  • IIT has no immediate plans to install this new version on any college-owned computers.

Windows Vista

  • Make the right purchase if you are buying a computer that you will be using on-campus. Not all versions are compatible with the campus network services. Check out the IIT information page about Vista, complete with purchasing recommendations.
  • Software Compatibility. While Vista has many new features, many existing applications and services aren't compatible with Vista yet. Check with software manufacturers to see if your favorite applications are Vista-ready before deciding to upgrade.
  • IIT has no immediate plans to install Vista on any college-owned computers.
