Summer Upgrades and ChangesIn addition to the numerous routine summer activities, IIT staff completed a wide variety of projects. Holland Hall 205 LabHolland Hall 205 was updated with all new computers, new tables, chairs, carpeting and paint It was also rearranged to allow for easier teaching in the room. If faculty want to reserve the room for their classes, e-mail a note to comp-lab-reserve@stolaf.edu. Rolvaag Library 115 LabThe Den (Rolvaag 115) also got a new paint job and new work tables. It also received a projector and teaching station so that the lab can be used for larger classes. To reserve the room, e-mail a request to comp-lab-reserve@stolaf.edu. Moodle UpgradedMoodle was upgraded in July. Most users won't notice any differences from the older version. Others might be pleasantly surprised to see features like an expanded gradebook, new question types for quizzes, a new groups interface, and blogs. Questions about Moodle should be directed to moodle@stolaf.edu. Network ChangesOver the summer, several network changes were implemented to better support applications like iChat, Skype and other VOIP software, and gaming consoles. While none of these applications or services are supported directly by IIT, we felt the need to make them available, particularly to students because you live here 24/7. SPSS Licenses and Dreamweaver for the LibraryIIT purchased a 30-user SPSS license to both increase the number of licenses available and to also make it possible to run SPSS from any location on campus. Additionally, Dreamweaver web-editing software has been installed on all of the public lab computers in Rolvaag Library. This was done to relieve congestion on other labs and make the software more widely available. Rolvaag Library 250The computer teaching lab in Rolvaag 250 (just outside the Helpdesk) has new iMacs with an interesting twist: they can run either MacOS X or Microsoft Windows. Previously, that lab was split half and half between the two platforms but can now accomodate a better mix of platform preferences. To reserve the room for a class, e-mail a request to comp-lab-reserve@stolaf.edu. OneCardIIT invested a substantial amount of staff time and resources in the OneCard system, expanding its use to more buildings for keycard access. New Web Look & FeelStarting in August, the website started getting a makeover. Over the next month or two, all of the official college pages will take on the new look and feel. |
