Here are some interesting little tidbits of information regarding IIT.
Historical Highlights
- In March of 1974, St. Olaf became the first site west of the Mississippi to run the UNIX operating system.
- St. Olaf was one of 12 founding members of the Minnesota Regional Network (MRNet).
- In September, 1988, St. Olaf was the first private/small college in Minnesota to connect to the “Internet.”
- First small college in the USA to have a web server (July 16, 1993). We joined a handful of colleges and universities such as MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Georgia Tech, Stony Brook, Michigan State, and UCLA.

- In October, the St. Olaf home page was viewed 742,000 times — about 24,700 times per day or once every 3 seconds
- 21,372 HTML files or web pages on the web server. This doesn't include PDF's, images, or applications written in Cold Fusion (like SIS).
Mail
- Approximately 27,000 (non-spam) mail messages on any given day
- The system blocks 243,000 messages identified as spam on any given day
- 23,950,000 mail messages — 19.9 million/month or 63,666 daily — delivered in 2005.
- In 1991 we boasted that just over 2000 mail messages were processed daily.
- Systems Management (root) received 43,656 e-mail messages (3,600/month) in 2005. In October 2006, Systems Management dealt with 4,419 messages.
Student Body
- 97% of the students reported that they owned a computer on the Fall ’06 student computing survey
- 77% of the students own a laptop
- Macintosh ownership climbed to 26%; higher in 1st year students
- 39% of the students own a printer
- 86% of the students reported that they rely on the St. Olaf provided computing labs
