Come to the ACC HelpDesk for Computing AssistanceA wide variety of services are available at the ACC HelpDesk in Rolvaag 251. Disk RecoveriesIf you have a floppy disk that is unreadable or has damaged files, the ACC HelpDesk may be able to perform a disk recovery. There is no charge for this service, but please bring a good, blank floppy disk with you for any files that we may be able to recover. Allow one working day for disk recoveries. If you would like to try to recover Macintosh files yourself, you are welcome to use Norton Utilities, located on the Software Library volume of the St. Olaf Software server in the Software Servers zone. Launch Norton Utilities, click on "Norton Disk Doctor," and select your floppy disk. If you are unsuccessful, bring your damaged disk to the HelpDesk; the ACC still may be able to recover files. Remember always to back up important documents to a Zip or floppy disk. This will be of great help in the case of unrecoverable files. VirusesViruses can cause your computer to act strangely (keyboard clicking, corrupt files, Word files that can be saved only as a template, etc.). Viruses are most commonly spread via floppy disks that travel from one computer to another. Macintosh Viruses: Virus protection software is available on the St. Olaf Distribution volume of the St. Olaf Software Server in the Software Servers zone. Open the Virus Software folder, drag the contents of the folder named "Drag onto System Folder" on top of your closed system folder icon, and release the mouse button. Drag-copy the contents of the folder named "Application--put in Utils" into the Utilities folder on your computer's hard drive. Once you have done this, double-click on the Disinfectant icon in your Utilities folder to launch the application and scan for viruses. PC Viruses: The virus protection program F-PROT is available (free of charge) on a floppy disk along with printed instructions at the HelpDesk. Word Macro Viruses: These viruses infect Microsoft Word on both the Macintosh and PC. Detailed instructions for removing and protecting against these viruses are available on the St. Olaf Web site at: http://www.stolaf.edu/services/acc/acc-newsletter/2-97/virus.html You may also bring suspected files to the HelpDesk for virus removal. UNIX Accounts and PasswordsIf you are new to the St. Olaf community and do not yet have a UNIX (e-mail) account name and password, you may pick up that information at the ACC HelpDesk. If you already have an account but cannot remember your password, you may get a new one by visiting the HelpDesk. Please allow one working day for new account generation and password changes. ScanningThe HelpDesk has a scanner you can use to scan either text or images. Photoshop software is available for minor editing of scanned images. Portable Computers and Overhead DisplaysPortable computers (both Mac and PC) and overhead display units are available for faculty and staff to check out. The maximum checkout period is ten working days. An individual may check out a portable or display unit three times per academic year without charge. After that, there is a charge of $10 per day. Toner CartridgesToner cartridges for a variety of printers are available for personal cash purchase or departmental or office charge at the HelpDesk. General Questions and ProblemsWhen you have a computing question or problem, please visit the ACC HelpDesk in Rolvaag 251, or call the HelpLine at ext. 3830.
