Problems with E-Mail Attachments

Many faculty and staff members have reported problems receiving e-mail attachments that they are unable to open in a usable form. Usually, this is because the file was created in a version of Word or Excel that older versions of the same application are unable to open. In some cases, recipients are not using an e-mail program that can open attachments.

Before sending an attachment, you need to verify that the recipient will be able to receive and open the document.

Be aware that documents created in Office 97 and 98 applications (specifically, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) will not open properly in earlier versions of those applications. Be certain you first save that document in an earlier version (e.g., Word 6.0, Excel 5.0, or PowerPoint 4.0). This will help assure that the recipients will be able to use your document.
