PEP Bridge to Success Program |
|
| . | |
In
order to give students a realistic introduction to college-level work,
PEP offers a Bridge Program that assists in the transition from high school
to college. Students take a college biology course for credit. The course
fulfills one of two science credits required for graduation and is integrated
with study skills and writing workshops. |

In
addition to participating in academic classes and meeting faculty, students
stay in one of the residence halls, eat in the cafeteria and enjoy the
college's recreational facilities. PEP provides activities to help students
get to know one another, the campus and the Northfield area. |

Here's a look at the Bridge Courses: |
|
Biology
121 - Biological Science |
|
This
course introduces students to the fundamental principles of biology. Students
attend lecture and participate in labs. Topics covered include ecosystems
and ecology, plant structure and function, genetics, single-cell organisms,
and speciation. The course is designed for non-biology majors but also
functions as a springboard for potential majors. |

| Study Skills | |
The
study skills course is taught in conjunction with the biology course making
the experience, as well as future academic courses, fuller and less stressful.
The course provides students with many options for such areas as text
study, note taking, test taking and time management. Students have the
opportunity to try different choices and see which style works best for
them. Exposure to the exercises and new study tactics in the class encourage
students to enhance study skills that will enable them to be successful
lifelong learners. |

Writing
|
|
The
writing workshop offers students the opportunity to work on writing strategies
that connect with the biology course papers. In addition, the writing
workshop encourages students to continue to develop their writing skills
that will assist them with other courses they will take at St. Olaf. The
students were able to practice such skills as summarizing, finding the
main ideas for their papers and revising. |

College
Orientation
|
|
The
course offers students an introduction to campus services that can be
used by students to enhance their academic experience and career opportunities.
Students receive direction in using campus computers, international and
off-campus study opportunities, and understanding the academic culture
such as academic course selections, requirements for majors, and the importance
of the cumulative grade point average. In 2002, students also attended
the University of Minnesota's McNair Poster Session which highlighted
summer research opportunities for PEP students. |
