framework planning principles

Planning principles, or tenets, for the Framework Plan were developed by concensus through the use of a questionnaire and a facilitiated prioritization exercise similar to the one used to develop the goals and objectives. These were discussed and finalized in the Discovery workshop. We feel that they help to make explicit much of what is implict about St. Olaf for many of us.

The graphic files that relate to each principle are fairly large, 4-500 k, and may take a while via some modems. We apologize, but feel that it is important that they be seen in this level of detail. The contour lines represent two feet of elevation change.

  • Establish land-use zones for similar functions

  • Concentrate academic facilities around the campus green

  • Site residential facilities on the periphery of the campus core

  • Preserve outlying campus lands as a campus greenbelt for recreation, research, and as a buffer to surrounding development

  • Concentrate athletic and recreation facilities below the campus core

  • Create welcoming campus entrances that guide visitors from both Highway 19 and Northfield

  • Maintain a loop road that encircles campus facilities and provides drop-off points with short-term/visitor parking

  • Create pedestrian core. Remove the majority of parking to the periphery of campus

  • Site buildings and campus amenities in an informal concentric pattern

  • Use a consistent palette of building materials (that incorporates the use of color and decorative accents) which is harmonious with the campus context
