Classroom and Office

Erin Ancheta grew up in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota and graduated from Park Center High School in 2002. While attending St. Olaf College she traveled around the world on Global semester and spent a month in Hawaii exploring multicultural education. In the spring of 2006 she graduated from St. Olaf with B.A. in Social Studies Education. This fall she will travel to South Korea to student teach at Seoul Foreign School. This is Erin's first summer with Upward Bound and she will be in the Bridge classroom.

Erin Boulay is a Minneapolis Washburn High School graduate who recently received her B.A. in Spanish and Hispanic studies from St. Olaf College. Erin enjoys running, thrifting, making picture albums, and any kind of hanging out with family and friends. This is Erin's first summer working for Upward Bound and she will be in the English, Spanish, and Careers classrooms.

Katherine Bucka has a B.A. from St. Olaf College and is currently teaching math at Mound Westonka High School in Mound, Minnesota. Katherine likes spending time with friends and family, and also enjoys downhill skiing and tennis. This is Katherine's fifth summer with the St. Olaf College Upward Bound program and she will be in the Math and Postsecondary Exploration (PSE) classrooms.

Derby Campo has a B.A. from St. Olaf College in History and Social Studies Education. Derby currently works for the St. Olaf College Educational Talent Search program as an academic advisor. His hobbies include running, reading, and listening to music. This is Derby's third year and he will be working in the Bridge classroom.

David Fankhanel, originally from rural northwestern Minnesota, now hails from North Minneapolis. He received his B.A. in English from St. Olaf College and now teaches at Coon RapidsHigh School in Coon Rapids, Minnesota. Dave can often be found reading, writing, cooking, gardening, listening to music, and running (occasionally all at once). This will be Dave's first summer working with Upward Bound in the English classroom.

Holly Grimsrud is new to the Upward Bound team, and will spend her first year as a classroom teacher in English Reading and Arts. She is originally from Zumbrota, Minnesota and graduated from Zumbrota-Mazeppa High School in 2003. Currently, she is pursuing her degree in Art Education at St. Olaf College, where she is also camptain of the Women's Basketball team.As a senior, Holly will spend the 2006-2007 fall term student teaching at North Trail Elementary School in Farmington, Minnesota, and at Rosemount High School in Rosemount, Minnesota.

Betsy Grawe grew up in Winona, Minnesota, and graduated from St. Olaf College where she majored in Spanish. Liz just received her Master's in Education from St. Mary's University and is also a teacher at Lakeville South High School in Lakeville, Minnesota. In her spare time, Liz enjoys dancing, music, travel, karaoke from time to time and working with kids. This is her seventh year with the St. Olaf College Upward Bound program. Liz will be working in the English, Spanish and Literary Magazine classrooms.

Ben Guthrie is a senior Political Science major at St. Olaf College. He is also pursuing a Chinese Studies concentration and plans to work in the area of international development. Ben was raised on a farm near Lincoln, Nebraska, and enjoys spending time outdoors, flying, music and art, and a good cup of tea. This is Ben's first year and he is in the office.

Marit Hagen grew up in Northfield, Minnesota, and just recently graduated from St. Olaf College with a B. A. in Math and German. This fall she will be student teaching at Lakeville High School. Outside of the classroom, Marit enjoys playing with her golden retriever, Ole, swimming and teaching swimming lessons, and hanging out with friends. Marit is excited to be in the Science classroom during her first year with Upward Bound.

Grant Klennert is a senior at St. Olaf College pursuing his B.A. in Chemistry. He is teaching biology, chemistry, forensics in the Science classroom and PSE this summer. He grew up in Lake City, Minnesota (also known as "The Birthplace of Waterskiing"), and will be coaching baseball this summer in Northfield. His interests include sports of every kind, video games, and playing cribbage. Grant is a huge fan of the Minnesota Twins (Go Twins Go!). This is his first year with Upward Bound.

Jaclyn Loftsgaarden is a senior at St. Olaf College majoring in Mathmatics. When she finishes student teaching next spring, she hopes to get a job as a math teacher at either a middle school or high school in Minnesota. Jaclyn's hobbies are spending time with family and friends, playing/watching sports, ballroom dancing, taking pictures, and scrapbooking. This is Jaclyn's first summer with Upward Bound and she will be in the Math and Postsecondary Exploration (PSE) classrooms.

Molly McGraw grew up in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota. She graduated from St. Olaf College with a B.A. in Engish, and a French concentration. She is licensed to teach both English and French. Molly's hobbies include reading, rollerblading, hiking, biking, camping, traveling, and cooking. This fall she is lookingforward to starting her first ful-time teaching job at Cygnus Academy inAnoka, Minnesota. This will be Molly's first summer working with UB and she will be in the English and Contempory World Issues classrooms.

Shaun Parks has lived in Minneapolis his entire life. He graduated from the University of Minnesota with a B.S. in Microbiology and a minor in Chemistry. He obtained his Life Sciences license through the MAT program at Hamline University in St. Paul, Minnesota. Shaun spends as much time outdoors as possible, and can usually be found living in a tent, hiking, or biking across the planet. He also enjoys reading, concerts, gardening and dabbling in carpentry. Shaun will be married in August, has a dog named Lulu and a cat named Vince. This is Shaun's second year with St. Olaf College Upward Bound, and he will be in the Science and Careers classrooms.

Mark Schelske grew up in mining towns in Northern Minnesota and Ontario. Dr. Schelske graduated from Red Lake High School, a consolidated school in a remote gold mining area of the Canadian wilderness 300 miles north of the border. He received his Bachelor of Arts' degree in English from Carleton University in Canada's national capital, Ottawa Ontario. He moved back to the States to attend graduate school and has resided in the Twin Cities for the past 23+ years. He earned an MA (T) in English from the University of St. Thomas, an MA in adult education from the University of Minnesota, and his Ph.D. in Education Psychology (Special Education), also from Minnesota. He holds teaching licenses in English and special education - Learning Disabilities and a K-12 administrator's license.

Dr. Schelske's professional experience includes ten years in the Minneapolis schools as a special education teacher and an alternate school administrator. He has been teaching at St. Olaf in the Education Department since 1987. He teaches Education psychology, counseling, and multi-cultural education. Currently he is department chair and acting as a special assistant to the president for campus diversity. His areas of professional involvement focus on educational opportunity, alternative education and urban education. Dr. Schelske's major efforts in the field of education involve program development and grant writing. He is also a strong supporter of TRiO programs, and has authored, or co-authored many of the St. Olaf TRiO Programs grants.

Steve Soderlind is an Associate Professor in the Economics Department, the Associate Dean of Social Sciences, and has been a fixture at St. Olaf College since 1979. Professor Soderlind received his Ph.D. in Economics from the Univeristy of Massachusettes Amherst, and his B.A. in Mathematics and Ecomomics from the University of Minnesota. A few of the courses he teaches in the Economics Department are: Urban and Regional Economics, Economic Principles, Evolutionary Economics and Consumer Economics. Professor Soderlind has done research and writings on the following: "Norway's Regional Development Policy, 1945-1980," "The Efficacy of Retirement Incentives: The Case of Higher Education" and "The Financial Consequences of Retirement Incentives for Institutions of Higher Learning." Professor Soderlind recently published a book, Consumer Economics "A Practical Overview," and this is his sixth year as the Bridge professor.

Brian Strand grew up in Byron, Minnesota, graduated from Byron High School, and graduated from St. Olaf College with degrees in Math and Art. He is a math teacher at the St. Paul Conservatory for Performing Arts. Brian likes music, art and running. He spends his spare time learning how to not fall off a skateboard and trying to look and sound like he knows what he's doing when he holds a guitar. This is his fourth summer with UB; he will be working in the Math and Arts classrooms.

Jared Wall grew up in Sioux City, Iowa and graduated from St. Olaf College with a B.A. in English and a concentration in Middle East Studies. Jared enjoys reading, writing, reading and writing, writing about reading, and currently took up a hobby of uncompetitive biking. After UB and some much-needed R&R, Jared is going abroad to teach English in Istanbul, Turkey.
