Festival Norway: Bergen and Oslo

Friday, June 4
Depart United States
Group flight departs Minneapolis/St. Paul, probably in the early evening.

Saturday, June 5
Arrive Bergen (L, D)
Arrive in Bergen and transfer to the hotel. Group lunch, if timing is appropriate. Walking tour to acquaint group with immediate neighborhood. Group dinner and opening discussion.

Sunday, June 6
Bergen (B, D)
Seminar led by Dan: “Overview of Norwegian Music History.” Lunch on your own, followed by a guided tour of Edvard Grieg’s home, Troldhaugen. Group dinner and preview provided by Dan of this evening’s performance. Festival Performance #1.

  • Troldhaugen (Trolls’ Hill) — This Victorian house, in beautiful rural surroundings on Lake Nordås, was the summer villa of composer Edvard Grieg and the site where he composed many of his famous works.

Monday, June 7
Bergen (B, D)
Guided tour of Ole Bull’s home, Lysøen. Lunch on your own, followed by a guided tour of the Grieg Academy and possibly a guest speaker. Group dinner and preview provided by Dan of this evening’s performance. Festival Performance #2.

  • Lysøen — The house is an architectural fantasy of the 19th century, with a dome, curved staircase, cutwork trim, and gingerbread gables. The estate includes eight miles of trails that meander around the island.

Tuesday, June 8
Bergen (B, L)
Seminar led by Dan or a guest speaker: “History of the Bergen Festival.” Group lunch and preview of this evening’s performance. Afternoon free with dinner on your own. Festival Performance #3.

Wednesday, June 9
Bergen—Oslo (B, D)
Travel to Oslo by train (about 8 hours). Group dinner at the hotel, followed by a walking tour of the city center. Possible evening performance, depending on schedule.

Thursday, June 10
Oslo (B, D)
Seminar by Dan or guest speaker: “Why Norway is Different.” Lunch on your own. Afternoon, guided tour of the Oslo Opera House. Group dinner and preview provided by Dan of this evening’s performance. Performance at the Oslo Opera House.

Friday, June 11
Oslo (B, L, D)
Guided tour of the National Gallery, followed by a group lunch and possible guest speaker. Group dinner and preview by Dan of this evening’s performance. Performance at the Oslo Opera House, the Concert Hall or other venue.

  • National Gallery — Housing Norway’s greatest and largest collection of art, European painting in general is on parade, with old masters represented from Van Dyck to Rubens, from El Greco to Cézanne and Matisse. Van Gogh weighs in with a self-portrait, and, of course, you can see Edvand Munch’s The Scream (above descriptions paraphrased from frommers.com)

Saturday, June 12
Oslo (B, D)
Majority of the day free. Farewell group dinner. Possible performance.

Sunday, June 13
Return to United States (B)
Transfer to airport for flight home.
