Jon Hallberg, assistant professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Community Health at the University of Minnesota Medical School, is the co-founder and medical director of the new Center for Medical Humanities and the Arts.

Jon graduated from Saint Olaf College in 1988 and the University of Minnesota Medical School in 1992.  He completed a family medicine residency at the University in 1995 and was in private practice in downtown Minneapolis for five years.  In early 2001 he joined the faculty of the medical school where he continues to practice, teach, mentor, and provide administration for a variety of projects. 

Since late 2003, Jon has served as the weekly medical analyst on the regional “All Things Considered” on Minnesota Public Radio, appearing over 100 times.  In addition, he’s been a guest on Midday with Gary Eichten and The Current with Mary Lucia.

In May 2006, Dr. Hallberg became a Bush Medical Fellow, an award from the Bush Foundation in St. Paul.  His fellowship focus is on health communication.  Jon has since studied at the Center for Documentary Studies at Duke University and at Dartmouth College. He has traveled to Louisiana twice since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Also in May 2006, Dr. Hallberg received the Early Distinguished Career Award, given by the Minnesota Medical Alumni Society to a physician for his or her exceptional accomplishments within 15 years of medical school graduation.
