From the Desk of the Dean of Students

The students at St. Olaf are smart, which is why many of them leave the frigid temperatures of Minnesota and use Interim as a time to study Spanish in Costa Rica or socioeconomic development in Bangladesh. But those who stay on campus also have something to look forward to when they’re not studying: sledding. Conditions this January have been prime for this favorite winter activity, and students have taken the opportunity to join local community members — including myself — in enjoying a ride down Old Main Hill.

St. Olaf No. 2 in Peace Corps rankings
St. Olaf ranks second among small colleges and universities for the number of alumni serving in the Peace Corps and is the 96th greatest producer of Peace Corps volunteers.

A love for the language of poetry
St. Olaf Assistant Professor of English Jennifer Kwon Dobbs' collection of poetry, Paper Pavilion, recently received the 2008 Sheila Motton Book Award from the New England Poetry Club. She shares how she became a poet, what inspires her work and her advice for students.

Regents Hall earns award for sustainability
St. Olaf College's Regents Hall of Natural and Mathematical Sciences has emerged from a competitive field of more than 100 construction projects to receive Xcel Energy's Best-Integrated Design award.

"'Worried and distracted' ... describes many of us most of the time," said President David R. Anderson '74 during his chapel talk Jan. 8. "Perhaps in today's world that is the way it has to be, but I'm not willing to accept that, nor should you."
