Job Description

Dear International Student Counselor Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in the International Student Counselor position.

Each year four International Student Counselors are chosen to serve about 30-40 new international students who come to St. Olaf College.  New international students arrive on campus several days before other new students for orientation - a time of intense activity and close bonding.  International Student Counselors play a key role in the first days new students are on campus – from assisting with orientation to attending Jesse James Days festivals. Throughout the year they will also serve as peer counselors, help organize activities for all international students, and encourage international students to participate in campus life.

International Student Counselors will participate in Residence Life Staff training sessions (with R.A.s and J.C.s) during Week Zero, beginning in late August.  They will also attend an orientation session for international roommates/counselors in early May.  Throughout the year they will work with the International Student Adviser, Area Coordinators, and Resident Assistants.

Because International Student Counselors are key people in fostering a healthy living environment in this community, there are certain expectations of the students who serve in this capacity. Please review the attached qualifications and expectations prior to completing your application. If you would like to apply to be an International Student Counselor for the 2008-09 academic year, please complete and return the application form to the International Student Advisor's office (Admissions Office) by Friday, March 20. Decisions will be announced April 6.

St. Olaf College and the international students appreciate the time and energy that  International Student Counselors have given to their responsibilities.  I look forward to working with a dedicated group of International Student Counselors throughout the coming school year.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. Thank you,

Sincerely,
Luyen Phan
