We had been together for a little less than three years, during which time he greatly impacted my life. He loved life, and had an incredibly strong will to live. He was an incredibly selfless person. I saw his generousity daily, whether he was helping someone with a computer, or spending some time to help me with whatever obstacle was in my path. It is something I admired greatly in him. He was my best friend, and I will always love him and the memories that we shared.

I had been building a small robot for an independent project, and he pestered me to give him the book from which the directions were taken. He wanted to make a cyborg's mask for himself. When I was in junior high, he convinced me that the trombones were the "skinheads" of the marching band: a group of truly bizarre individuals. The next year, there he was, complete with a security alarm, safe, and answering machine in his locker. To top it all off, he was the administrator of the "Whine-O-Meter," a device by which our band director's Whines were measured (we were in the hundreds by the end of Concert Band.)... Gadgets, gadgets, everywhere...

I remember the snowball fights we all used to have in pep band when we didn't have to play. I also remember all the water fights in concert band that the trumpets and trombones would have. Those were the good old days.

Where did you learn about this homepage: Was sent a notice What memories would you like to share about Chris?: Chris Green is probably the single reason that my computer's guts are not spread all over the grass beneath my window. When I first got to St.Olaf I was having tons of problems whith my computer. I couldn't figure out how to get my computer hooked up, but here came Chris, hero of the day. He set up my computer so that it was connected. Everything worked fine until I tried to print something out. It was a tragedy, since this paper was due in about an hour! I ran upstairs, very frustrated, and Chris came down right away. He did all sorts of things to my computer, none of which involved hiting it, which would have been my first choice, and got my computer up and running. Now everything works great, but I am so thankful that it didn't at first, because I would have missed out on knowing a wonderful person. Sincerely Katherine Holger

I knew him only a short time while he was at St. Olaf during the 96-97 school year. I remeber him helping anyone and everyone with their computer troubles at the drop of a hat. I remeber him often joking around and being goofy which made him fun to be around. Most of all, I remember him always smiling anytime I saw him. I know his smiles brightened up anyone who was around him, and that's what I will always miss about him. Though I knew him a short time, I know he was such a great guy!
Date: Sun, 2 Mar 1997 03:52:09 +0800 (SGT) Subject: Comments from stadtldi@martin.luther.edu VISITOR'S INFORMATION: Name : Dirk Robert Stadtlander Relationship with Chris: High School singing Buddy Where did you learn about this homepage: Was sent a notice What memories would you like to share about Chris?: My meomory is not really a memory. It is an experience I had after Chris died. Here's a little history... Chris was being his usual self when my family got a new power Mac that we couldn't get working correctly. He came over and had the glitches fixed in about 45 minutes. While he was trying to figure things out he installed a Norton Disk Doctor. About six months after he installed it, whenever it shut down and ran a check it said that there was a problem with the bit map. I tried to open Norton and figure out how to fix it. I had no clue as to what to do. I was getting really frustrated, so I simply quit. In one of my last emails to Chris while he was in the hospital, I think it was right after his transplant, I told him that as soon as he was out of the hospital he had to come over to my parents house and show me how to fix the volume bit-map. He said he would happy to help and the computer would run fairly normally until he came over. Alright, that is the background for my anecdote. I came home on J-Break on Wednesday, and right before I left for the hospital, my cousin, Ben Knipfer, called and let me know that Chris had passed away. On Saturday, after I came home from the funeral, I emailed some a friend from school who was at home for J-Break. I wrote her and left my computer on with Z-term running so that I could log back on to check if she would email me right back. I went down stairs to talk to my mom for about ten minutes. When I walked back into my room, Norton Disk Doctor had opened up and was running a diagnostic test. When the screen came on and said, "Fix Volume Bit-Map" I clicked 'okay' and the problem was solved. I think Chris had been making the rounds from Wed. through Sat. finishing up some things that he wanted to get done. I felt his presence in my bedroom that day and knew that the Spirit of Chris would always be with us... long live the Gadget Guy! Dirk Robert Stadtlander, friend and admirer Editor's Reply: Dirk Robert Stadtlander, For a more personalized answer, Chris's Dad, Terry, told me this same story last Tuesday when the family was here for the memorial service. I thought it was kind of strange, and somewhat unbelievable. I have absolutely no idea how Norton Disk Doctor (NDD) could have started examining the disk and fixed the bit map (let alone start up on its own), but I do remember that NDD was how Chris got me into computing. My computer also had the same problem, a volume bit map error, which resulted in the loss of 50 mb of Hard Disk space. Somehow, I stumbled around the remaining 20 kb of my drive and fixed the volume bit map error with Disk First Aid. That got me back my 50 megs. Chris then brought in NDD and managed to fix the rest of the errors, which was literally everything else. (I remember printing out the NDD report, and I still have it from 7 Dec, 1994. Looking at the errors now, I am amazed my computer didn't just die and force me to reformat my Hard Drive.) Believe me, his legacy of servicing other people's computer problems has not ended ... Ho Relationship with Chris: Close friend Where did you learn about this homepage: From friends and family What memories would you like to share about Chris?: Wow! What can I say that yes my life was truly enriched by knowing Chris. To relay one story about him would be an injustice. He was one of the great ones, now to know that chris is in a set position is disheartening, but however, I know that he is on the move every day. He is on the move in every one of our hearts and will always remain there. Editor's Reply: Kevin Ho, I can understand your difficulty in trying to summarise the life of Chris. You spend many years with him, and there is no way his life could be summarised in one paragraph. Even though I only knew him since freshman year, I can't summarise all the experiences that we shared either. He was my friend, corridormate, confidant, computer guru and mentor, the resident techno-nut, and one of the best practical jokers in the dorm. His room was always full of weird stuff, most of which I never figured out. Yet he was also one of the guys that people always wanted to be around. The room he shared with Tom Larsen was always filled with visitors, from a drug-nut to much more normal friends. He was one of those guys who learned to live life, and savour every minute of it. Hopefully, I'll learn that some day. (Okay, so this was one paragraph. However, there is still a lot left to say.) Stephen Chen =) '97
Date: Sun, 6 Apr 1997 06:17:54 +0800 (SGT) Subject: Comments from proksch@stolaf.edu VISITOR'S INFORMATION: Name : Roger Proksch Relationship with Chris: friend/teacher Where did you learn about this homepage: Was sent a notice What memories would you like to share about Chris?: First, thanks to Steve Chen for putting this site together. Its a totally appropriate, wonderful way to pay respects to a truly unique individual. I didn't actually meet Chris until a few years before his death. I thought there would be more time to get to know him. As I read the stories here and talk to people, some of the frustration and grief at his untimely exit is starting to get better. I know I will remember always remember Chris. I met him when he was a new college student and I was a new college teacher. We went through some changes at the same time. I know he made me feel I was doing something worthwhile. I only wish I could thank him for the way he touched my life. I think my most outstanding impression of Chris had to do with his curiosity. It was insatiable and creative! He was full of ideas. Sometimes, his curiosity ended up hurting his grades. He got distracted by all the cool stuff he could do with life and wasn't interested in doing things simply because it might help his gpa. His attitude was very unique and refreshing. I try to remember it and apply it to my own life. He is missed and he will not be forgotten.

Where did you learn about this homepage: From friends and family What memories would you like to share about Chris?: All though I did not know Chris all that well, I know that he was a good friend to my brother. Giving his friendship is about the best thing he could have given anyone. Which he obviously gave well, because he touched the lives of many people and those people are the ones who can live on with the warmth of Chris's friendship still growing inside of them.

He did not have the moniker Gadget in high school but it truly would have fit. I still remember how he hooked up an answering machine in his locker to turn on when someone knocked on it. I still remember how he helped me cover an accident in my parents' garage that they still do not know about. And I still remember, most of all, what a good guy he was, in every sense of the phrase. There is so much I could say about him but almost nothing that hasn't already been put on this page. A great friend, a great person, I remember him fondly. Thank you, Stephen, for making this homepage. Though I've never met you, I know you're a great guy. P.S. And Christian - We got our wish, he's not dean of students anymore. I always marveled at his "creations" during high school. My personal favorite was the answering machine he rigged up in his locker... Since he was so involved and had so little free time, I often had difficulty connecting with him. With the answering machine I could simply bang on his locker and leave a message that he needed to stop by my office. Whenever he did stop by he renewed my faith in youth... what a wonderful person he was! Amy Kanellis Counselor-City High

Knipfer" Subject: Re: Memories of Chris Green VISITOR'S INFORMATION: Name : Chad Knipfer Relationship with Chris: Brother of one of his best friends What memories would you like to share about Chris?: Hi there. My name is Chad Knipfer. I am the brother of one of his best friends, Ben Knipfer. The best memory of Chris that I have is that of when our family took a trip to Chicago and he came with. We just had a blast around the town and just hanging out. The next thing...the thing that describes him a lot would be his saga genesis playing. He was awesome at every game and was just amazing to watch. I remember sitting and watching him play columns for hours and him beat the computer everytime. That's my 2 cents worth... Thanx. Music lives in all people. You just need to know where to find it. Known on ISCABBS as Baritone. @>--^---- \o |\ / \ *wave* Bye! Write soon!!!
