Qualifications and Job Descriptions
Minimum Qualifications
Applicants must have full-time enrollment status at the College. Applicants must have sophomore class standing by date of employment. Applicants must be in good academic and judicial standing. Due to potential conflicts of interest and time constraints, student staff members are not allowed to serve as chair or co-chair of the Inter Hall Council.
All Returning Staff and Student Hall Coordinator candidates must have at least one semester experience as a Junior Counselor or Resident Assistant before they are eligible to apply.
Terms of Employment
Residence Life Student Staff will adhere to all policies of the University and maintain full-time enrollment status as well as good academic standing at the College.
Staff Positions
Junior Counselor - The Junior Counselor position is a developmental program for student leaders. They are directly supervised by the Area Coordinator for their area. Junior Counselors work collaboratively with a cooperating Junior Counselor in a paired setting to provide a vibrant, engaging community for first year students. Although we welcome all to apply, preference for the Junior Counselor position is given to applicants with Junior Class standing by date of employment and to applicants who can commit to both fall and spring semesters of employment.
Resident Assistants - The Resident Assistant position is a developmental program for student leaders. They are directly supervised by the Area Coordinator for their area. Resident Assistants work to provide a vibrant, engaging community for upper class students. Although we welcome all to apply, preference for the Resident Assistant position is given to applicants with Junior or Senior Class standing by date of employment and to applicants who can commit to both fall and spring semesters of employment.
Returning Staff - The Returning Staff position is a continued experience as a part of a developmental program for student leaders. Students selected as returning staff are offered positions as Resident Assistants or Junior Counselors based on the skill sets shown and needs of the Office of Residence Life. They are directly supervised by the Area Coordinator for their area. In addition to the job responsibilities of a Junior Counselors or a Resident Assistant, Returning Staff serve on a departmental committee. Only individuals with at least one semester of experience will be considered for returning staff positions, and preference will be given to applicants who can commit to both fall and spring semesters of employment.
Student Hall Coordinators - Student Hall Coordinators are members of the Residential Life Student Staff at St. Olaf College. They are directly supervised by the Area Coordinators and are responsible for the management of their designated areas. In that role they advise Junior Counselors or Resident Advisors, in addition to serving as the primary advisor for their Hall's Hall Council. Student Hall Coordinators are key in establishing a community environment conducive to maximizing academic, personal, and social development; maintaining healthy and safe living conditions; and providing overall support of the mission of Residential Life.
