Base Requirements

• Student must have been awarded either a Federal Work Study (FWS) or State Work Study (SWS) award types.
• If working with minors, student must successfully complete a background check (provided by the organization or St. Olaf College)
• Must have the I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification Form completed.

The Process

• Jobs are posted on the Student Career Opportunities Marketplace. Students apply and interview for the position.
• Selected students will receive a job offer and communicate with site supervisors to coordinate their start date, schedule and other details.
• Student Employment Office check eligibility and necessary documentation.
• Once approved, students are ready to report to work.

Employers

Must be a federal, state, or local public agencies or certain private nonprofit or for-profit organizations. Off-campus FWS jobs with federal, state, or local public agencies or private nonprofit organizations must be in the public interest. Off-campus FWS jobs with private, for-profit organizations must be academically relevant to the maximum extent possible.

Structure

Compensation – 75% St. Olaf College / 25% Community Partner ; 100% St. Olaf College for all tutor positions.

Billing – Community Partners are invoiced at the end of each academic semester

Rate of Pay – $15.00/hr (2024-2025) is the standard. Higher rates may be available depending on jurisdiction and job type.

Supervisory – Organization has sole discretion of employment terms related to the scope of work.  Organization will have access a timecard approver for student employees.

How It Works

Organizations who wish to participate may contact the Student Employment Program Office to determine eligibility and needs.  We will provide details of the program and expectations for both all entities.  If all things are in order, an agreement will be established and signed by representative of St. Olaf College and the Organization.  Job descriptions are submitted and posted on the Student Employment job board.  Students undergo the organization’s hiring and selection process as appropriate.  Selected students reports to work once we confirm all employment documentations are in order.

Includes non-profit or government organizations (including St. Olaf College) that serves the public community. (i.e. museums, public offices, charitable organizations, schools, etc.).

Formerly the “America Reads and Counts”, the program include tutoring activities to K-12 learners at organizations or institutions that serves the public.  This program collaborates with Carleton College to ensure unity of services for the Northfield community.
