Late Night Musings

by Todd Reemtsma, NBS Section Chairperson

toddxmasThanks and Giving
I hope that the fall has treated you well.  It was great to see so many members of our section at the Trollwood Performing Arts School in Moorhead, MN for the USITT-NBS 2010 Fall Conference.  A huge ‘thank you’ to our hosts and organizers!  I was also sad that many of you couldn’t make it due to production schedules or travel constraints.  Outside of our section meeting at the USITT Annual Conference, the NBS Fall Conference is really our opportunity to get together in an educational and social way and get to know each other and take pride in our section.  I realize that 100% attendance by section members is unrealistic, but I would like to see what we can do to get as close to that number as possible – no matter where we have our fall conference!

One of the best things I like about this time of the year is a feeling of gratitude and generosity.  And with that in mind I want to offer congratulations to the students that were chosen for NBS Scholarships to the 2011 USITT Annual Conference in Charlotte and to the student that was chosen for the USITT-NBS Scholarship in support of attendance of the 2011 Prague Quadrennial!  Thank you to everyone who applied and to all the faculty members who encouraged their students to apply and wrote letters of recommendation.  Please check out the article in this newsletter to find the list of winners.

In no time at all it will be March and many of us will be on our way to Charlotte, North Carolina for the 51st edition of the USITT Annual Conference March 9th – 12th, 2011.  If you are attending the conference, please plan on joining other members of the Northern Boundary Section on Thursday, March 10th, 2011 from 8:00AM – 9:15AM in a room that is yet to be determined for our section meeting.  If you have agenda items that you would like to see covered, please drop me or one of the NBS officers a line prior to that date.

One of the things that I think we are missing in our NBS Newsletter is more contributions from the colleges, universities, and professionals in our section of production photos and success stories of how design/technical challenges were navigated.  It would also be nice to hear from former students on how being part of the NBS Section may have helped them develop their careers.  I want to hear about what is happening in our section and I can’t believe that I am the only one.  In this day and age of electronic correspondence, it only takes a little bit of time to drop a line to let everyone know about upcoming productions, share useful information, ask for advice, and so much more.  We are in a communication field – let’s do it!
