Annual Symposium and Meeting
Friday and Saturday October 14 and 15, 2011 - Waterloo/Cedar Falls, Iowa
Topics for scholarly papers and creative work include, but are not limited to:
Proposals for 20-minute presentations of studies reflecting interdisciplinary approaches to costume and textile topics, world wide regional dress, costumes and activism, art wear, costumes for performance, costumes in museums. Original designs related to these themes are welcomed.
Abstracts: For proposing scholarly papers abstracts must be no longer than two typewritten, double-spaced pages. Sources should be included within the two-page limit. Only the title should be included at the top of the abstract. Please include name, address, telephone number and email address and professional affiliation on a separate page. Student submissions are welcomed. Please identify student papers on the cover sheet.
Original Design Proposals For presenting original design work for a panel presentation: Include title, short description, materials, and two images of the design (one full, one detail). Student submissions are welcomed.
Abstracts must be received via email no later than 1 April, 2011

The Symposium includes scholarly papers, original design showcase and events to include:
- Carne Viva: Pieces of Our Lives in Postville – Activist interpreter’s theatre about Guatemalan weavers from Postville, Iowa
- Talking Textiles - UNI Museum Exhibit
- International Dance Theatre performance
- Iowa Heritage Costume Invitational - Hearst Center for the Arts
- Focus on Fibers: Selections from the Textile Center, Erica Spitzer Rasmussen, Curator – UNI Gallery of Art Showcases
- Cedar Falls Main Street - The National Trust for Historic Preservation has awarded Cedar Falls the Great American Main Street Award. The restored Black Hawk Hotel on Main Street will be the conference hotel. Conference welcomed by Cedar Falls cultural, restaurant, and retail establishments.

The Symposium will be at the University of Northern Iowa in Cedar Falls, hosted by the UNI Arts Consortium. The UNI Arts Consortium has representatives from the Textiles and Apparel Program, Department of Theatre, UNI Gallery of Art, University Museums, and International Dance Theatre. Events include sponsorship from Humanities Iowa and the National Endowment for the Humanities.
