New Nonprofit Association is “Making Reuse Happen”

Launch Party for Potential Members on June 26, 2013

Minneapolis, MN (April 25, 2013) ---  ReUSE Minnesota, a nonprofit association, is bringing together a diverse group of businesses, government organizations, and citizens --- those whose work or interest revolves around reuse ---which includes everything from thrift stores, costume rentals, furniture and appliance repair and antique stores, to name a few.ReUse
ReUSE Minnesota supports the interests of the reuse, repair and rental businesses in the state of Minnesota, focusing on the environmental, social and economic benefits of reuse, with the goal of increasing the amount of goods and materials that are kept out of landfills.  Reuse supports more sustainable consumption patterns and can lower a person’s carbon footprint through the reduction of new purchases.  Reuse also supports the local economy.  A 2011 study by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency revealed that the reuse sector is responsible for 46,000 Minnesota jobs and because it is a service-based sector, reuse tends to keep money local.
“We are really excited about ReUSE Minnesota.  ARC Value Village has expanded its reach just by being involved as a founding member.  Imagine the benefit when I can network easily with hundreds of reuse businesses, and when people looking for great secondhand, repair or rental options can find them quickly and easily,” said Greg Rue of ARC Value Village and ReUSE Minnesota treasurer.
ReUSE Minnesota will officially launch with an event for interested potential members at the Summit Brewery in St. Paul on June 26, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  The kick-off will be webcast, for those in out-state Minnesota.  “We know that about half of the sector is outside the metro area, and we plan to serve and promote reuse throughout the state,” said Stacey White, board president.
The sector, which is broad, includes such varied businesses as antique stores and party rental supply houses, electronics repair and consignment, thrift stores and commercial furniture refurbishment, as well as building material reuse, architectural salvage, and much more.  More information about ReUSE Minnesota and details about the launch event can be found at www.reusemn.org

Alicia Wold, NBS Metro Member-at-Large and General Manger of CostumeRentals is a ReUSE Minnesota Board Member and has been working with other board members to bring this organization to life.  She shared this press release and comment.  “This organization is a great way to connect with ReUse resources in your area.  Student membership is free!  If you are not in the metro area we could really use your help in identifying and connecting with reuse resources in greater Minnesota.”.
