FALL CONFERENCE 2016
September 16-17
The annual Fall Conference is scheduled for September 16 and 17 and will be hosted at Hamline University, St. Paul, Minnesota. Details for the Fall Conference will be published in the August issue of this newsletter.
Join us Friday evening, Saturday morning and afternoon for a weekend of theater sessions and activities at Hamline. The Conference will include the "Cover the Walls" design exhibit featuring student design, production and technology projects (three national conference registrations will be awarded), Shakespearean Production Design Display (see more), membership meeting, and conference sessions through the day on Saturday.

NBS Bylaws Changes Coming in Fall
USITT is addressing the issue of how Sections now relate to National. Most Sections were formed in the 1970s when there were few issues of corporate liability for USITT and the Institute was much smaller. There were few income/expense payments other than immediate bill payments. Over the years since, USITT has gained status, growth in membership, a significant corporate structure, several endowed Funds, an annual income of $2M plus, and a corporate liability for its subset, the chartered sections. After several conversations regarding two possibilities for realignment with National, NBS determined that we would be best served by signing an Affiliate Agreement. This is actually what we are now informally and it gives us a plus by getting the Section under National’s liability insurance for events we hold in the Section. A few years ago for our Fall Conference held at Trollwood Performing Arts School in Moorhead, MN, it cost the Section $500 to carry insurance in order for us to be able to use the site. This was unexpected but made us cautious about future commitments of this type.
In order to achieve the new relationship, it is necessary for us to tweak our section Bylaws, sign the Agreement, and pay National $75 a year for our part of the insurance. We will also have to send a yearly financial statement for USITT to include in their corporate income tax statements. It will likely take another year to get this all finalized, but be prepared to look at the proposed Bylaws changes in the August Newsletter and vote on them at the September Fall Conference at Hamline University, September 16 & 17.
