Finding Career Options at Stage Expo

by Hannah Steele, University of Wisconsin at La Crosse
Recipient of an NBS Student Scholarship for Annual Conference and Stage Expo travel

Hannah    When I was a Freshman in college, I was not aware of USITT and all of the splendid opportunities that it provides until a couple of my friends and fellow theatre majors returned from their trip to the Annual Conference and Stage Expo in 2017. As they told me stories of all of the sessions they attended, the amazing old and new technology that they were exposed to, and all of the networking that they were able to do, I immediately knew that this is a conference that I should attend. Without the assistance from the Northern Boundary Section of USITT, I wouldn’t have been able to experience any of that. I would like to express my endless gratitude to NBS and everyone who made this scholarship possible and for giving me the opportunity to attend the National USITT conference in sunny Ft. Lauderdale, Florida!
As an emerging stage manager, lighting designer, and electrician, the conference was exactly what I had hoped it would be. From the first moment I stepped into the conference venue, I was surrounded with countless events to attend! One of which that was particularly interesting was the session “The Magic of Disney: Telling Stories with Light”. During this session, two designers from the Disney parks discussed how they light the magical world that so many people cherish. I found it very inspiring to hear the about the process of making every moment and detail that goes into creating the experience of Disney that so many people are affected by, but never notice.
My favorite part of the conference and perhaps where I spent the majority of my time was at the Stage Expo. The whole experience was overwhelming at first, but with the help of my friend, Sarah, who is a seasoned professional at navigating the floor, I was able to create a plan of what booths to visit as well as speak to countless numbers of technological and theatrical companies, unions, organizations, and graduate schools and to see what the theatrical industry had to offer. The expo floor allowed me to explore and discover the vast amount of options I have for careers after I graduate, which I appreciate immensely.
The experience of attending the 2018 National USITT Conference in Ft. Lauderdale will be one that I will cherish and I will continue to use the knowledge and connections I gained in future endeavors at school as well as the theatrical industry. I’d like to thank the members of the Northern Boundary section again for their generosity. I hope to be able to attend the conference next year in Kentucky and expand upon what I learned this year as well as discover even more opportunities for the future! [ ]
