St. Olaf authors, professors to read from new anthology on men and nature

Three St. Olaf professors will give a reading on Wednesday, Sept. 29, from "Eco-Man," a new anthology on men and nature edited by Mark Allister, a professor of English at the college.

Joining Allister for the reading will be "Eco-Man" contributors James Farrell ("The Nature of My Life"), a professor of history and director of American studies at St. Olaf, and Jim Heynen ("When Tillage Begins"), a well-known author of juvenile fiction and an associate professor of English at St. Olaf.

Allister's contributions to the collection include an introduction that examines the traditionally separate disciplines of men's studies and nature writing -- what he calls "ecocriticsm" -- as well as an interview with noted author and professor Scott Russell Sanders, titled "To Be a Man in the Common Life of Nature."

Published by the University of Virginia Press, "Eco-Man" features more than 20 essays by poets, philosophers, historians and academics. But the book, which features contributions from women as well, is intended for a general audience.
