Men skate to 2-2 tie with Augsburg at home

The St. Olaf men's hockey team hosted Augsburg College on Friday, January 30. The Oles knew a win would put them in contention for the playoffs, but they settled for a one point advance in the conference standings when they skated to a 2-2 tie in overtime.

Both teams came out strong in the first period, but neither team could get the puck in the net.

In the second period, Augsburg scored first only two minutes into the period. An Augsburg forward split the defensemen and shot upper glove on Garret Hasti (Sr., St. Louis Park, Minn.). The second Augsburg goal came eight minutes later off of a rebound in front, that was fired past Hasti.

After the second period, the Oles came out with renewed spirits. St. Olaf leading goal scorer Josh Biser (So., Waunakee, Wis.) got his seventh on the year as he slipped the puck through the goalies legs, from close range. The Oles tied the game with a little over three minutes remaining as Ron Guild (So, Kent, Wash.) scored on a similar goal to Bisers. Guild walked in front of the net and put a low backhand through the goalies pads. The Oles controlled the overtime session but were unable to bang home a goal, leading to a 2-2 tie in overtime.

Both teams meet again tomorrow in game two of the weekend series at Augsburg at 7:00 p.m.
