Cats sneak past Ole women
February 3, 2004
The Oles faced the College of St. Catherine on Monday, Febraury 2nd. Despite the treacherous weather, the Oles made the trip to St. Catherine to face the Wildcats in a tough battle. The Oles came up just a few short, losing the contest 66-74.
The contest started slow, but the Wildcats speed and quick transition game, gave them a 40-33 advantage at the half. The Oles shot an impressive 48.4% from the field, but the Wildcats shot an uncontestable 56.7%.
In the second half, the Wildcats maintained and expanded on their lead for much of the second half, but the Oles made a strong comeback, led by Christina Sampson (FY, North Branch, Minn.), to bring the game within four points with less than two minutes to play. Despite their impressively strong comeback, St. Olaf could not get within less than four points of the Wildcats. Late desperation fouls, sending St. Catherine to the free-throw line, allowed the Wildcats to win the contest 74-66.
The Oles had three players in double figures. Jill Johnson (Sr., Butterfield, Minn.) led the effort with 14 points, Sampson had 13 points, and Holly Grimsrud (FY, Zumbrota, Minn.) scored 11. Johnson, Sampson and Grimsrud also led the Oles with five rebounds a piece.
The Oles will head to the St. Joseph to face the College of Saint Benedict on Wednesday, February 4, before returning home to host Bethel College on Saturday, February 7th.
