Bethel slips past Ole women's hockey, 4-3
February 7, 2004
On Friday, February 6, the St. Olaf womens hockey team hosted Bethel College at the Northfield Ice Arena. The Oles played with good intensity but were not able to get ahead of Bethel. The Oles slipped to the Royals, 4-3.
With less than a minute left in the first period, Bethel scored the first goal of the game when they slipped the puck past the St. Olaf defense. Throughout the whole period, the Oles controlled the momentum as they out shot Bethel 12-6, but skated into the first break trailing 1-0.
Early in the second period, St. Olaf answered with their first goal. Kayla Wente (Jr., Waterloo, Iowa) chipped one in off a pass from Maria Richardson (Fr., New Brighton, Minn.) and Kate Barnett (Jr.-C, Burnsville, Minn.)to tie the game at one apiece. Not long after Wentes goal, the Royals scored their second goal, to go up 2-1. Erin Baxter (Jr., Rosemount, Minn.) put the Oles on the board again. Baxter had a rebound land on her sick and she slipped the puck past Bethels goalie, to tie the game for a second time. With less than a minute left in the period, the Royals scored to take a lead of 3-2 going into the second break.
Bethel scored again early in the third period, leaving the Oles behind by two goals. Lindsay Weier (So., Menomonie, Wis.) scored a power play goal, assisted by Barnett and Brit Schultheis (Jr., Shoreview, Minn.). With about ten minutes left in the game, the Oles gave every effort to go into overtime. St. Olaf pulled goalie, Andrea Smith (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) with one minute left in the game and almost scored numerous times in an attempt to tie up the game, but Bethel edged out the Oles, 4-3.
The Oles are now 6-5-0 in the MIAC and 8-7-2 over all. The Oles face the Bethel College Royals again on Saturday, February 7 at the Colombia arena at 7:00 p.m.
