February 9, 2004
On Saturday, February 7th the St. Olaf womens hockey team traveled to the Colombia Ice Arena to compete against the Bethel Royals for the second game of the weekend. St. Olaf split their weekend series with Bethel as they shutout the Royals, 1-0 in the Saturday night game.
The action started right from the first face off. St. Olaf led in shots during the first period as they outshot Bethel 11-6. The Oles overcame a few penalties in this period, played strong defense and went into the first break scoreless.
For most of the second period both teams went back and fourth with plays and were not able to capitalize on any. With less than five minutes left, Bethel had two players in the penalty box, to gave St. Olaf a two skater advantage. The Oles worked the power play and came close to scoring numerous times but didnt get the puck past Bethels goaltender. Two seconds after the power play, Lindsay Weier (So., Menomonie, Wis.) scored a crucial goal off a pass from Kirsten Paulson (So., Moorhead, Minn.) and Maria Richardson (Fr., New Brighton, Minn.). The Oles took the 1-0 lead into the second break.
In the third period, St. Olaf held onto their lead as Bethel came out strong recording 15 shots against St. Olaf. The team played strong defense in the last few minutes, as the Royals pulled their goaltender, in the last effort to score. The Oles notched yet another shutout, their fifth of the season.
Goalie Kerry Rollwagen (Jr., Mendota Heights, Minn.) played a solid game in the net, with 30 saves to her second shutout of the season.
St. Olaf is now 7-5-0 in MIAC standings and 9-7-2 overall. They return to the ice on Thursday, February 12 for a game against Hamline University. The action takes place at the St. Thomas Academy Ice Arena and the puck will drop at 8:00 p.m.
