Men's hockey drops close game to Saint John's
February 8, 2004
The St. Olaf men's hockey team hosted the defending MIAC champions, Saint Johns on Friday, February 6th. The needed a two game sweep to move up in the standings, with playoffs approaching. But the Johnnies came away from the Friday night game with a 3-2 win.
The Oles came out slow, giving the Johnnies an early lead in the first period. The Oles got on the board later in the first when John Egge (FY, Wisconsin Rapids, Wis.) deflected a shot past the sprawling goalie. The Oles took the lead in the second when Ron Guild (So., Kent, Wash.) made an outstanding pass on the back door to Kyle Hilmerhausen (FY, Wausau, Wis.). Hilmerhausen slammed the puck into the open net, giving the Oles the lead.
The Oles kept the 2-1 lead into the third period. The Johnnies answered back near the end of the game when the Oles gave up one power play goal and one shorthanded goal.
Sophomore Dan Kehler (Woodbury, MN) started his first game of the season. He played well, stopping 42 shots in the 3-2 loss.
Both teams meet again on Saturday night in Collegeville, for game two of the weekend series.
