The St. Olaf Women's team played their first match of the spring season at Bethel College on Saturday, February 7th. It was a close match right from the beginning and ended in the same fashion with Bethel coming out on top with a five to four match score. The match began with doubles. The Oles and Royals split second and third doubles with each team winning decisively at those positions. However, the first doubles was down-to-the-wire. After surviving two match points, the Bethel squad prevailed in the tiebreaker. The quality of play was excellent by Kristen Buchta (Neenah, Wis.) and Beth Erie (Rochester, Minn.) from St. Olaf and Jen Kasner and Jodi Gustafson from Bethel.

The singles matches were very competitive. The Oles actually went ahead four matches to three matches after wins by Kristen Buchta, Jamie Brau (Arlington, Minn.) and Sarah Pray (Madison, Wis.) and a close loss by Jorie Steffen (Lake Geneva, Wis.). However, Bethel pulled out the victory with two solid wins at first and second singles.

The Oles are now 1-1. Their previous victory coming over the University of Wisconsin-Stout in the fall. There next match is Saturday, February 14th at the Owatonna Tennis and Fitness Center with the squad from the College of St. Benedict. The match will begin with doubles at 11:00am..
