Macalester holds off Ole women's basketball
February 16, 2004
The St. Olaf women's basketball team traveled to Macalester College in St. Paul on Saturday, February 14. The Oles were searching for their second win of the season, as they beat Macalester a month earlier on January 14. St. Olaf missed their opportunity this time, though, and lost the contest 55-46.
The Oles and Macalaster came out looking ready to play in the first few minutes, but the Oles struggled shortly thereafter. After Christina Sampson (FY, North Branch, Minn.) made a lay-up less than five minutes into the game putting the Oles up 6-4, St. Olaf did not score again for over eight minutes, as they committed seven turnovers. St. Olaf got back within two near the end of the half, but Macalester hit three key shots in the last minutes of play to put them up by nine at the break.
Although the Oles were set to make a comeback, Macalester put up a tough fight and took a 15-point lead in the first four minutes of the second half. St. Olaf refused to give up and cut the Scots lead to two points, when Jill Johnson (Sr., Butterfield, Minn.) hit two key freethrows with 2:28 to play. Macalaster stand out Afton Hanson hit a three-pointer in the Scots next possession, and the Oles could not respond. They missed all four of their last three-point attempts, and the Scots took the game 55-46.
Johnson led the Oles with 22 points, hitting 10-of-12 from the freethrow line. Sampson added nine points, while Christine Schwictenberg (So., Hopkins, Minn.) grabbed eight boards.
The Oles play their final home game of the season on Wednesday, February 18 against St. Thomas. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m.
