The St. Olaf men's hockey team hosted Gustavus on Friday, February 13th. It was a good weekend for the Oles, as they spilt their series against Gustavus. The Oles took the first game on home ice, winning 5-3 in front of a packed crowd.

The Oles came out hard the first period scoring two goals against Gustavus goalie Dan Melde. Ted Bickle (So., Minnetonka, Minn.) got a pass all alone in front of the net and fired a shot through Meldes legs. It only took 40 seconds for the Oles to strike again. Former defenseman, David Short (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska) playing forward drove hard to the net and put in a puck that Melde had dropped in front of the net. The Oles took the lead into the first break, 2-0.

The Oles continued to pour on the scoring as Ron Guild (So., Kent, Wash.) got a great pass and broke in on a break away. When Melde went down, Guild snapped a shot over the glove hand.

At the end of the second period Guild struck again, putting in an impossible shot from the side of net. There was a huge scramble and Melde left the net allowing Guild to fire a no-angle shot in the net. The Oles took a 4-0 lead into the second break.

Gustavus mounted an attack in the third, scoring three goals revolving around several power play opportunities. The Gusties pulled within one, but Keith Townsend (Jr., Sterling Heights, Mich.) put the puck into the open net with only seconds remaining to ice the 5-3 win.

Dan Kehler (So. Woodbury, Minn.) started in net for the Oles, stopping 34 of 37 shots. Kehler had a shutout going until the Gusties got on the board late in the third on the power play.

Both teams meet again Saturday night in St. Peter at 7:00 p.m.
