Ole women's hockey shuts out Hamline, 6-0
February 12, 2004
On Thursday, February 12 the St. Olaf womens hockey team traveled to the St. Thomas Ice Arena to face off against the Hamline University Pipers. The Oles hard work paid off gaining them a 6-0 victory over the Pipers.
Early in the first period, St. Olaf jumped on the score board as Sarah Ray (Sr., St. Paul, Minn.) fired a shot from the blue line off a pass from Lindsay Weier (So., Menomonie, Wis.) and Maria Richardson (Fr., New Brighton, Minn.). The Oles continued to control the momentum of the game and scored again with five minutes left in the period. Kate Barnett (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) and Erin Baxter (Jr., Rosemount, Minn.) started the play and then passed the puck to Richardson who finished it giving St. Olaf a 2-0 lead going into the first break.
In the second period, St. Olaf put the puck behind Hamlines goaltender two more times. The first goal was scored by Barnett, who skated the puck out of the corner and across the top of the face off circle and then ripped a shot from the slot. Kelsey Skogland (FY, Shakopee, Minn.) had the assist. The fourth goal was scored by Brit Schultheis (Jr., Shoreview, Minn.) off a pass from Kayla Wente (Jr., Waterloo, Iowa).
With twenty minutes left in the game St. Olaf scored two more goals on the power play. The Oles worked the puck around and got Hamlines players out of position, when Barnett passed the puck to Ray who quickly shot and scored the fifth goal. Near the end of the game, St. Olaf struck again when Schultheis picked up a rebound from Skogland, giving the Oles a 6-0 victory.
Goalie Andrea Smith (Jr., Burnsville, Minn.) earned her third shutout of the season. The Oles pounded the net recording a team high 59 shots on goal.
The Oles are now 8-5-0 in MIAC standings and 10-7-2 overall. St. Olaf plays the second game in their series against Hamline on Friday, February 13th at the Northfield Ice Arena. The action starts at 5:00 p.m.
