Oles upset second ranked Macalester, 75-71

The St. Olaf Men's Basketball Team upset the Scots of Macalester College on Saturday. After trailing 38-33 at halftime, the Oles went on to beat the second best team in the MIAC 75-71 at Skoglund Athletic Center.

In the first half the Oles fought hard against the Scots, holding the lead for the first six minutes, but then found themselves down eight with 3:52 remaining. A late run by St. Olaf lead to a hlaftime score of 38-33 in favor of Macalester. In the second half St. Olaf was hot from the floor shooting 58%, while they held the Scots to only 37%. The Oles took the lead back from the Scots with 9:54 remaining in the game, and after a few ties and lead changes, the game was tied at 69-69 with 1:39 remaining. Although the Oles only shot 2-5 from the free throw line down the stretch, their defensive intensity forced two turnovers which led to the victory.

Leading the way for St. Olaf was Matt Schlenker (Sr. Rochester, Minn.) with 20 points and eight rebounds. Ted Gonsior (Jr. Centerville, Minn.) scored 14 points and dished out seven assists. Will Johnson (So. Minneapolis, Minn.) came off the bench and scored 14 points on 6-8 shooting. Jon Butala (FY West St. Paul, Minn.) also scored double figures, netting 12 points.

The next game for the Oles is Wednesday, February 18th when they travel to St. Thomas for a 7:30 game. The win puts St. Olaf at 5-13 in MIAC play and 8-15 overall..
