Ole men track finish second at Border Battle

The St. Olaf mens track and field team found hosted the Border Battle home meet in Tostrud Center, competing along with their rivals, St. Thomas, and two schools from Wisconsin-Eau Claire and Stout. The Ole men scored 143 points to finish 2nd, behind meet winner St. Thomas with 189 points.
The Oles received several strong individual performances as they continue to look ahead to the MIAC Championships on March 5-6. Decathlete Evan Sundquist (Jr., White Bear Lake, Minn.) placed second in the long jump, third in the high jump, and fifth in the triple jump. The Oles star thrower, Peter Cathcart (So., Lakeville, Minn.) finished second in the shot put with a throw of 49-11 and fifth in the weight throw with a 46-0.
The team also received some strong performances from their distance and mid-distance crews. Peder Arneson (Sr., Montevideo, Minn.) kicked down the competition to win the 3000 meters in a time of 8:50.82. Malcolm Richards raced to a victory in the 5000 meters with his time of 15:24.73.
The Oles were bolstered by impressive performances by the younger members of the team. First year John Lamppa (FY, Northfield, Minn.) placed second in the 1000 meters in 2:35.33. Tom Cruse (FY, Hastings, Minn.) and Dane Hamann (Soph., Flossmoor, Ill.) finished second and third in the 600 yards, running blistering times of 1:14.00 and 1:14.47 respectively, putting them atop the MIAC honor roll. Next up for the Oles is the Tostrud Classic this Saturday at St. Olaf, where they will face competition from Wisconsin-La Crosse, the University of St. Thomas, and Carleton.
